Speaking of rubber bowling balls........
« on: August 14, 2013, 03:23:59 PM »
Hello everybody!

Not long ago I was told that I "should" remove my AMF 3-dot from play not because it's made of rubber....  but because it isn't perfectly round.

It is true.  It seems the ball was molded from two halves put together and the seam isn't even with the rest of the surface.   (Easy to see if you hold the ball up to a light source.   The light reflects differently of the seam).   Of course, when the ball rolls over this area, you hear the "thump - thump".

Was this a common problem with rubber balls in general?   Aside from a major resurfacing job, is there anything that can be done?   (Is there anyone even WILLING to resurface rubber anymore?)

I hate to put the ball away, it's a lifesaver on the super dry stuff for me.

I do know according to my dad that they could be made incorrectly to the point where they were out of round, but how common it was I'm not sure ( my grandfather used to worked at the old Ace blowling ball plant).

I'm also not entirely sure of the process, but of the 3-4 hard rubber balls I have laying around none of them have a seam. Granted all of mine are Aces so its possible someone else used a different technology or way to mold them, although I do know that Ace used to also pour some for Brunswick and Ebonite.

They range from my dads which was made in 1971 to a couple that my grandfather brought home in the late 80's and early 90's.

If you enjoy having a rubber ball in the bag, you can still find some on ebay.

I used a Hy-Nek Magic for years as my spare ball, bought it on ebay back in like 3 or 04 for like $20 shipped.
