Special promotions to get new league bowlers
« on: April 20, 2004, 11:10:23 AM »
What types of promotional ideas would you run outside of the normal casino/ pro am type league to get new bowlers to try out a 12-16 week league? Trying to think outside the box and get more people bowling in my small 12 lane center that has gone from 540 bowlers 4 years ago to now 160, any and all ideas are welcome.

We have leagues here that every one gets a new ball at the end of the League regardless of what their team placed. These leagues usualy will get mostly new bowlers, a few of the hardcore teams will enter and the rest is filled with people who want to play a short league that normaly wouldn't.

I am in two leagues. One of the is the New Ball league. If it was just another money league, I would only be Bowling one night.

Have you tried Drop in leagues? Not going to get new Bowlers but it will get some regulars to Bowl an extra night most weeks.

Winning and Losing are both very temporary things. Having done one or the other, we move on. Gloating over Victory or Sulking in Defeat is a good way to Stand Still.

You could run a practice league, where you pay a fee and get x number of games free for practice during the week.

What type of area do you have, alot of recreational, is it older or younger, family oriented?  This all could be factors in what to do.

Ask...and ye shall receive!!!

Here's just a few...

Do a pizza league where every team gets a free pizza each night.  Add the cost and tip into the weekly dues and get the pizza place to put your flyers on their boxes!!!  Remember, they want to sell pizzas too!

Bad Bowler's Leagues are always great.  Make sure they know there are no jackpots to be won, other than maybe mystery.  A lot of new bowlers are intimidated by attitudes of good bowlers who may join these leagues, and the good bowlers often play their role well!

Battle of the Sexes leagues always go over well.  Young guys and girls just like to go out and bowl!

One important thing to note...it isn't always the type of league that you are starting, but sometimes it's how you present them.  Who are you talking to to get into the leagues?  How are you advertising?  Do you think it's worth spending $1000 to get one league going where you might have only 12 teams of 3...but you have their addresses, phone numbers to advertise to forever, and you have the opportunity to win them over by giving them a helluva good time in your bowling center!

Please email me...I have a lot more!

My local center is doing a ball giveaway in every league but one this summer. And they aren't plastic balls, either - they're power groove reactives.
Drilling is $25 - otherwise, included with all leagues, including adult/junior.
Only the scratch classic is exempt.

Because I live in a rural area with only 1 other bowling center in close proximity (about 15 miles southwest) we have a population of around 180,000 people within 25 minutes of the center I normally bowl in. If 1% of them can bowl, it would be a decent jump from the current numbers in the center.

Promotional money and advertising is already factored in- I was just thinking of some unique ideas and the ones presented so far are excellent. Can anyone think of special incentives to get youth bowlers in the door? I know the long season commitment is tough, that's why probably 3-4 month leagues would work best for them unless they wanted to bowl an 8-9 month league.

Kids always want to bowl.  The hard part is finding a way to advertise to them.  Most schools have given me a hard time about placing flyers or distributing flyers.  That's why the cartoon network leagues and other leagues like that work so well, because they are advertised in places that these kids often go.  I didn't start bowling until I was 14 simply because I never knew about leagues for kids.  Unfortunately, advertising to kids is expensive!

Adult/Child doubles leagues are popular in my area.  Red pin with prizes is always fun and popular also.

During the summer at my house we have a scratch-draw for teams night, and adult youth league another night. An extra $12 a week gets you a Track ball and lessons from 3 different pros at the end on the 12 week season. But between golf and the kids ball games, I'll miss out on most of it though.
