Speed vs Accuracy
« on: January 09, 2005, 06:13:30 PM »
In the past 6 months I have made numerous changes to relax my swing.  The idea behind the change was to become more accurate and consistent in my release and speed control.  Well, I haven't been able to practice as much as I would like, so the change is progressing slower than I'd like.

However, I notice that I am more accurate but my speed has dropped at least 1 mph.  I am relying on more length and control drillings to create the same "look" on the lanes.  I figure once I get this muscle memory burned in, I will work on increasing my speed again.

So, what do you think is more important right now, speed or accuracy?

I guess for me this question depends upon the conditions that you bowl on more often. If what you bowl on for the majority of the time is THS, speed would be more important than accuracy. I rarely see the 14-15 mph shot outscore the 18mph-19mph shot in my local THS league. However if we are bowling on flatter conditions, reverse block shots, or sport/PBA type conditions, accuracy and control of ball speed seem to be necessary in tandem in order to score effectively. I find on my Tuesday league I don't have boards left or right of target- I have 1 board to hit at the right speed and right trajectory in order to carry effectively.

I've always placed more of a premium on accuracy because you'll be able to find a way to get to the pocket- whether you carry better than the next person or not would be another story.

The changes I made were to become a better tourney bowler, not a better league bowler.  I can still string them up when I am getting a ball reaction I like.

A 1 mph drop is just a 'drop in the bucket'. Accuracy will over supercede speed in importance in the bowling hierarchy, as far as I can see. I think it is very important for you to continue to burn this free armswing into memory. Don't ever give up on it. As a basis for good bowling under virtually all conditions, it plus accuracy and timing are probably the 3 most basic elements without which you cannot succeed. Kudos!

It depends on what your ball speed has dropped to.

If your ball speed is below 17 MPH in the heads then you will probably have trouble on a lot of conditions.

If it is 17+ MPH in the heads then the accuracy will pay off.

I am pretty sure it is over, by the quibica system, I am 15 to 17 at the pin decks.

Funny. I've been working on relaxing my swing, and since I'm not muscling it any more, my speed has INCREASED by at least 2 mph.

I agree with 'Bones on this one.  After you have speed you can always back it down.  Hard to go the other way.

I agree.  Eventually, I will try to increase the speed again, but not for quite awhile.  I am still working on staying relaxed, hitting my mark and not hitting up on the ball.  Lots of changes, but I feel they will payoff.

I agree that anything under 17 in the heads is getting a little slow on todays conditions.  However I also bowl on Qubica, and when I show 15 on Qubica, I am hitting over 17.5 in the heads based on CATS.

Thanks Bob, I have never had the opportunity to bowl on the CATS.  So, I will take your word on that.

Trim, I am doing the same thing as you were/are:  up and down-but I am starting to fell very comfortable.  I actually have confidence that I can bowl well every time I go to the lanes.  I pretty ditto everything you said about what balls to use, fatigue, etc.
