I can't make the 6-10!
« on: January 11, 2005, 01:07:47 AM »
Yep, it's as bad as it sounds. I've recently gone to using plastic and firing straight at most of my spares. For the most part, this has been a success and I think it's going to help me quite a bit as time goes on. Nevertheless, I'm having a hell of a time making the 6-10. It seems like no matter where I stand, I fire the ball right by the 6 and clip the 10 alone. Now, to give you some insight, when shooting the 10-pin, I stand with my right foot on 21 and just go hard and straight. Originally, I just tried standing in the same spot for the 6-10. After I began having problems, I tried moves both left and right, but the same damn things keeps happening. I know that part of this is mental at this point, but there has to be something that I can do to get over these yips. Last night, I was 8-8 on 10-pins and 1 of 3 on the 6-10, and I chopped the 10 off of the 6 both times that I missed. Can anyone give me something to try that they think might help me get over this. It's embarassing to shoot 200 instead of 220 because I can't make something as easy as this. Help!

This may seem radical (nay, even undoable), but instead of looking at a board/spot on the lane, target the 6 pin.

Gene......2 things...possible fixes:

1)get nuts and go way left!  I start w/ my left foot (5 step approach) and I mark myself on the lane w/ my left foot as well....so for 10 pins my left foot is on 40 and go hard and straight over the 4th arrow w/ plastic.  For the 6-10 I move 3 boards right w/ my feet and my target.

2) Line up directly behind the 6....square up and throw the ball directly at the 6...like playing the twig...a little drastic but if you're accurate w/ your spare ball...it CAN be done

good luck

Try to throw your other ball (not plastic) at it straight.  You may get just enough turn to get the 6 as well as the 10.  What I do is move 5 boards right and throw the same mark as I do for the 10.

Gene - I feel your pain. I've chopped the 6 off the 10 5 or 6 times the past week. And that's with a spare ball thrown straight, but still hooking.

I do basically the same thing as Jeff on this one.  I stand as far left as I can and throw my plastic all the way across the lane for my 10.  My accuracy is great now on the 10.  For the 6, I move about 5 boards right.  This has worked tremendously for me.  For the 6-10 I just throw my 6 pin shot and it seems to work.  I only leave a few of these, so I don't shoot them nearly as often as just the 6 or 10.

I’m like Bob I go left as far as I can and throw cross alley at it. Occasionally I’ll chop the 6 off but not very often.

I don’t consider taking only the 10 off a chop. It is a miss, you never had a chance to make the spare. A chop is when you hit the front pin flush and don’t hit the back pin(s).

I went through this a while back, and revised how I was shooting the right corner (I was picking the 6 off the 6-10, and taking the 3 off of the 3-6-10).  Used to be, I would target 3rd arrow for these spares, and adjust my starting spot by a couple of boards depending on the leave.  When I started chopping everything, I moved further left, and now target the 4th arrow throwing slightly harder and straighter.  It seems to have the ball moving more across the face of the 3-6 and into the 10, resulting in more covered spares and less picks.  Good luck!  If it makes you feel any better, it's harder to pick one or the other than it is to just pick the dumb spare up!

I stand as far left as possible and target the shadow of the 6 pin. By targeting this, it makes you not worry so much about hitting a mark and more about just throwing the ball out there. Increases your loft a bit also.

The way I see it is you should just pretend your trying to hit a 9 pin dead in the face.

I like to make sure the pins go down by hitting both the 6 and the 10 with the ball.  Just personal preference I guess...

For the 6 pin, I use the same target (4th arrow) as for the 10, but I will move 1 board right on the approach.  There's not really a right or wrong way to do it, just use what works for you.

traget the fth arrow for ten pins. if you hit it flush witha  goot reales you know your spot.

the 6 pin is a 3 bords right move to hit it flush.

so a move of 1 1/2 boards will expose both pins to the angle of attack and you will hit both pins.

now all you have to do is actually throw it good. the angles all work in your favor.

still sounds easy that done
