Title: Speed, why so important?
Post by: Djarum on September 30, 2005, 05:31:34 AM: I noticed that more and more bolwers nowadays are throwing the ball faster. I really have not noticed an increase in average per-se, but I have seen topics and other articles that discuss a correlation of speed to higher average/better bowler. Why is this? When I was coached, I was always told that you can have too much speed. This was in the 18-21 mph range. But alot of pros throw it that fast. Is it more about speed, or is it more about the sweet spot between speed and revs? If your speed matches your revs and vice versa, than what is the deal with having faster speed?

I throw the ball about 15-16mph, but I have about 400-450 rpm's, so I hook everything off the lane. Another reason is that more speed can kick pins around more, although too much speed will blow right past the 5 and leave splits, so there is still such thing as too much speed.

1) monster balls that make left or right turns at 50 feet, so you need speed to get down lane;
2) ultra stripped flying back ends.
3) the current mania for ultra blocked lanes - wet middles, dry outsides, lots of bounce, so speed carries the ball further down for a later bounce and more pocket entry angle.

Post by: HamPster on September 30, 2005, 02:03:08 PM: All the newer bowling balls practically hook by themselves. You can see people with no revs at all getting tons of hook and carry. By that token, people with higher rev rates need more speed to get the ball to rev or roll later down the lane to retain energy and maximize the balls' hitting power at the pins.

Post by: MSC2471 on September 30, 2005, 02:13:45 PM: Just as it is important for crankers with higher revs to match up with their speed, remember that us strokers need to keep the speed vs revs ratio in mind as well. I've found that I carry better when I'm throwing the ball at 15-16 mph than when I get to 17-18 mph, unless the conditions warrant a faster ball speed.

I do think the core/coverstock combinations plus the lane conditioning has played a role in faster ball speeds being necessary to carry efficiently in bowling.

Post by: Speedburner89 on September 30, 2005, 05:53:17 PM: i throw 14mph and i honestly don't think my carry suffers, yes Speedburner throws only 14mph, hence my rev rate is fairly low. I think my reaction is nice because i can always lay a ball out with a late drilling, i never see rollouts ...... and yes, i do get the occasional messenger every now and then

If I have oil my speed stays high to the pin deck. And I get massive carry at times because of my strong entry angles(side roll).

If I don't have oil because of my revs my speed gets down in the high 13s at the pin deck.

My speed off my hand is in the mid 17 mph range to 18.0. At 15.5 at the pin deck and faster I'm a tough bowler, at 13.8 I"m carry deficient.

Most of today's consistently very good bowlers are 15.5 at a minimum at the pin deck and many faster even on dryer lanes.
