Over memorial day weekend, I was bowling in a tournament. One of the 6-8 tournaments this organization holds throughout the year. I have cashed a few times in these before, but never did well enough to make the big money at any of them. This time however, after qualifing for the semi-finals, and then doing well in the semi-finals, I stood in 2nd place. The 20 of usd that were left would bowl one more game to determine the top 5 that would bowl a stepladder tv style to determine the winner. That is when it started.
The guy that was sitting in the first position at that point was asking me about a split if we both ended up after our 1 game still in 1st & 2nd place--at first I didn''t know what he was talking about, since i have never been in that high of a position--so he explained it and asked if I wanted to "split" the the 1st & 2nd place money if we both make it to that final match. Something about that didn''t sit quite right with me(for myself, I mean), and I turned it down, and I kinda explained nicely to the guy that if I bowl really bad in the final game, that I don''t deserve that kinda money anyway. It ended up not being relevent for him because he bowled bad the 1 game and dropped out of the top 5. I however, managed to squeak in to the 5th spot, and ended up climbing up the ladder to the final game. Then the guy sitting in the first position asked me the same thing--I still didn''t get what he was talking about, might have been the way he said it, and when he explained it, I could only tell him the same thing I said to the other guy that asked me. I said if I bowl really bad, I don''t deserve the the big money anyways. He said the reason they do it is because of the differnce between the 1st & 2nd place money---1st was 10,000 and 2nd only 2,500. I understood why some people would do that in light of what he told me, but something within me just didn''t feel right about it. He got kinda happy I think when I said that I couldn''t do the split--based on how I was bowling that day(not great, but good enough to get there), I don''t blame him--he turned to his wife i guess it was a said "he doesn''t want to split", --but when I started out the final match on fire and he didn''t , he was really gettingb upset, really upset--I ended up winning the natch and the 10,000 dollars--but what I was most pleased with is thast even though I was in the handicap deivision, I bowled a 202 scratch in the final match on a tough oil pattern to win.
To me, that would kinda cheapen the final match, which quite a few of the bowlers & other people hung around to see what would happen--I mean if 2 people already agrede to split the money--how can the final match even end up being legitimate? where is the pressure? if you don''t bowl well who cares right? you still come away with decent money...I just couldn''t do that myself.
Besides, this was the farthest I had ever gone in one of their tournaments. Now that I finally got there, if I was going to go all the way, I wanted to win everything I could if I did.
What I really wanted to ask is, is this a common practice when getting that far in big money tournaments? Is there some unwritten rule in bowling that says that someone in my position should have "split" the money? If anyone else has ever been in that situation what did you do?

It's a common practice in the big money tourneys. If you won you would still get credit for the win. Where in blue blazes is a hdcp tourney paying that much?

If asked again, a better way to do it would be to go halfway with him....say a $7500/$5000 split. That kinda discrepancy between 1st and 2nd cash is caused by tournament directors wanting to get better turnout. You can do a gentleman's agreement for whatever split you decide.
Then the title match still has some meaning....you would be bowling for $2500 bucks...still a big game.

lol...dogman, my thoughts exactly. I was like Holy Sh it, a handicaper paying 10k!!!!!!!!!!
To the OP: Good job not splitting the money. You made him have to perform for the the dough and he did not....Awesome work!

F that!!! splitting is for pusssys... there is a big difference for a reason, first EARNED IT PERIOD!!
you did the right thing not to split, awsome job/bowling bcw!!!
-
I chop it up almost everytime. I won't go exactly 50/50 just so the match means something. But with such a huge difference b/w 1st and 2nd you can't take the risk of getting bad breaks. Every heard the saying, you bowled a better game but lost. I'm taking the guaranteed money

Tommy Jones and Kenny Simard are Gamecock fans...are you???

theres a $7500 difference between the 2... not sure why ppl would wana "split" it!! go home with $6250 or $10,000................. um this should be an EZ no brainer, BOWL FOR THE $10,000!!!!
IF YOU DID SPLIT, THERES A $3750 DIFFERENCE IN SPLITTING FROM GETTING 1ST!!!!!!!!! ppl are S T U P I D now days.....

Or you could lose and get $2500, which is a far cry from $6250.00. Thats why they ask to split. The realistic thought process is lose and get $2500 or split and get guaranteed $6250.00.
-
I hear what you're saying T C, but it's also take a guaranteed $6,250 or risk only walking away with $2,500. I love bowling for the big bucks, but I'll take a guarantee of an extra $3,750 any day.

I've always wondered if the pros have made these sorts of agreements before bowling the winner take all Motel 6 Roll to Riches.
-
I do it with friends. But I understand the gap like that I would either ask to split or make a deal that first gets 7500 and second gets 5000.

Words of advise. Limiting your self to just one company is never smart. Get proven balls out on the market. Global, Storm inc, Ebonite international, er what ever it may be.
-
i see the point of the split($3750)..
but as a TRUE COMPETITOR, should always go big or go home!!! gota be in it to win it! lol
-
My question is, how would you enforce this "agreement"? If you know the person, fine, but what's to say the other guy will "give it up" if he wins?

If you are smart you both sign a contract to prevent that from happening.

It's obvious that a few people responding in this thread have never bowled for more than a $5 pot game...especially TC300
What tournament was this that you won? I am surprised a tourney in the middle of summer paid that kind of money.

Russel I am wondering to, let alone as some others mentioned a handicap tourney with that payout!

Actually, a couple of years ago or so , when the overall economy went south...,.,,enteries in these uba tournaments went way down--if the two are related, I don''t know, but they took about 5 months off--to restructure, and came back with lower top prize money--yes lower----if this was the memorial day tournament 3 years ago or so I would have won 20,000 for my performance---but 10 will do just fine.

I have split in the past for 1st/2nd place money.
Usually it's been between the guys I normally car pool with.
Makes it a more enjoyable car ride home.
Nothing worse than a quiet car for a couple of hours.

Why would I want to watch you flag a 10 pin for free? Let alone pay $5 for it? It's not about confidence, the poster above nailed it. If you've bowled great for 12-20 games to get to that point, one game is a pretty short period to determine a huge discrepency in money.
I would ask you how many times you've been in that situation, but I'm pretty sure we all know the (real) answer.

Agree with complete - $7500/5000 or maybe even $8500/4000 or $8000/4500. I don't think at any point the loser should more than double his money.
Also remember that most times you are going to get a tax form for your prize amount. So you win $10k and are going to pay taxes on the full amount regardless of what type of agreement you make with the other guy.
