How to Deal with Transitioning Lanes ?
« on: November 15, 2008, 07:54:47 AM »
I've got a pretty good four balls with varying reactions for my league conditions - 1. late angular, 2. strong midlane, 3. smooth even arcing, and 4. a light condition pearl with skid-snap reaction.  I can start with any one of them and score well, but I don't really know which ball to go to as the lanes transition and I lose my line to the pocket.

Is there a certain type of ball reaction you want to start with on fresh conditions, and other types of reactions to switch to when the lanes transition ?  I'm pretty much limited to playing right of third arrow.

Over the past few years I've bowled at different houses, different leagues, and occasionally tournaments having different lanes, oil patterns and oil volumes. I've found that the ball(s) I've had did not always work well - so I'd buy a new ball to do what the others weren't capable of.

So, I decided on those balls based on what works best in different house/tournament conditions.  I just don't know what to do when the backends tighten up (due to carrydown ? or burnt track ? I don't know).  I just know I lose my line to the pocket over the course of the set.

You have to learn when, where and how to use the balls. Besides, different reaction types won't help much if the balls are all only suitable for a small condition window, due to coverstock strength or surface prep. The reaction is just one piece of the puzzle. Curious as cool rockin daddy how you came to settle on your arsenal?

Besides, it is IMHO always helpful to have a strategy at hand how to adjust in the course of play - but that's individual. You should know with which ball to start, on a basic line, and how to adjust from there once thing start to change, e. g. moving deeper or closer to the gutter, change hand position, switch to another piece, etc.

That's what training is for - get to know your equipment, and make sure it is complementary both condition- and reaction-wise, and learn to read the lane. The latter is easier said then done, it needs some experience to make the right decisions, at the right moment. But if you get it right, you have IMHO a cutting edge in tournament or league play - that's when you truly learn to "play" bowling, not just toss balls

Good luck, though!

Don't change balls transition with one ball then adjust when the transition slows down?
