3-6-10 spare problems
« on: May 16, 2007, 11:30:32 AM »
well my spare game has never been as good as i would like it to be so since i got the whole summer to practice might as well improve it. My single pin spares are much better know but my multi pin spare conversions arnt. My 2 spares that i have problem with are the 3-6-10 and the 3-6. I never know what ball to use. stike balls seems to hook and chop and spare ball always seems to skid and chop. what should i be using and how should i aproach these spares

Not to be a wise ass, but, in all sincerity, you must approach every throw with confidence. COnfidence is usually based on knowing exactly what you want to do and how you intend to do it, once you get onto the approach. Making up your mind on any variation of what you planned on the approach will lead to doubt and failure.  This sounds like the obvious, but unless you know it and believe it, ...

That said, I'm a believer in polyester or non-hooking or tiny hooking balls for most spares. I tried urethane for a while but returned to plastic: White Dots. I throw, most times, a small hook; sometimes, depending on the lanes and the oil condition, I'll throw it straighter.

Like with strikes, the only other suggestion I can make is to give yourself as much room for error as possible; the higher the margin for error, the more likely you are to make it.

Depends on what you are doing.  Personally, i fire straight at everything.  I'm pretty solid on 10's and 6-10s, but i did have a fear of the 3-6-10 for a while.  i then got my head out of my arse and made a move.  for 10s i stand on the 5th dot on the approach and fire over the middle arrow.  for the 3-6-10s i move one dot and one arrow left.  been making them ever since.

going straight increases your margin of error CONSIDERABLY.  you don't have to worry about lane conditions either.

Why does everyone try to make it harder than it really is?  Overthinking makes the game that much more difficult.

Sorry, caffeine, decreases.  Increases your chances of making it.

This used to be one of my most hated spares, then a friend told me something that has helped me so much. He simply said "Flick off the board that is 3 boards left of your ten pin mark". And honest to god it worked for me and now that spare doesnt bother me. SOOOO my ten pin mark is 17th board...so i dont move my feet at all and aim at 20 (4th arrow) and flick it off on my follow through...dont know why, but it works. Give it a try...at least try the 3 boards left part. (i dont care if you flick it off or not lol)

WHat the heck does "flick it off" mean?
