After effects of Honor Scores
« on: June 01, 2006, 10:55:46 PM »
Do you guys think that honor scores have after effects on your game?

The reason I ask is because I shot my first 300 a few weeks ago on the last night of my Thursday night mixed league. Since then, everytime I go to my Monday night summer league, I feel invincible. I feel like I should always throw a 300. I know I am capable so my expectations are very high now. Even though I have not thrown another since then, I have gone back to back 700's for the first time and am averaging 232 through 3 weeks of summer league.

I feel like the 300 gave me the sense and confidence that I can bowl with the higher average guys. Everything feels right and the results are proof. I have never bowled this well for an elongated period of time before. Could the honor score have changed me in a way where I will take my game to the next level?

What do you guys think? Were there after effects of your first honor score?

Congratulations!

I think it is not only a honor score that makes you "better". Having accomplished something - being a 300 game, a Greek Church conversion or your first 600 or 700 series -  is a confirmation of your skill.

I feel similar: last Monday my club's sport summer league started, a mixed trio league with bowlers ranking from 120 average to Germany's premier league amateur players. Lanes were nice, but with short oil. Switched balls, and to my surprise my next 13 shots were 12 strikes plus 1 open - too bad, it was across 2 games , the open was an 8 score in the last shot in a 12th frame.

Although not a honor score, it aroused much attention, leaving a "scent mark" in the club. And the feeling is great. Hope it last for a while and I can keep up that performance.

To some it can be like Roger Bannister breaking the 4 minute mile. Once they got over the mental hurdle of doing it then it became easier to do.

Scoring in bowling can be the same way once you get over the mental hurdle higher scores will come easier.

But I’ve seen it work the other way. Expectations run so high that once the chance for an honor score is over there is a big mental let down and they don’t perform as well.

Fortunately for you, you have appeared to clear the mental hurdle and you are now letting your body perform without your mind getting in the way.
