Staff members! How dumb are some of you?
« on: January 18, 2010, 01:46:35 AM »
You are given a chance of a lifetime  to be on the staff of a ball company. You are given
free equipment, based on your contract it could be only X amount of $ per year in
credit for your equipmetnt.Or it could be free without limits. Then some of you turn
around a totally disrespect the company, by selling your used and new equipment
to somebody,( which in most instances is against your contract.)Why would you do such
dumb and ungrateful thing.Give the equipment away. This will make you and the company
look so much  better. You will be impressing upon other bowlers that may want to
try your companies equipment how nice you are, and you just may convert a bowler
to try your company again in the future  if they like the equipment you gave them.
Their next purchase my be from your company.
This is great advertising and marketing. When they see you selling things they may
think you have little respect for your company. They may not care either, they may only
be looking out for themselves also. The point is, Stop it.Don't be like them.
You see the guys on the tour at tournaments and TV giving away equipment all the
time .Do you know how much of a fan you may have just made if they were not a fan already.
Also the pro shops see a used ball or new one brought into the shop and are told that
a staff member sold them the ball. This is not  using common sense guys.
If you are on staff, act like a professional, not some person looking to make a extra buck for yourself!

I'm not sure who this is directed at but for every staff member i've met they cannot sell the equipment they get, it has to be kept, destroyed, or given back to the company.

Ok I've seen staff members sell there equipement that they got. Why shouldn't they have you pay for the ball, why should they just give it to you not all pros and people on staff or rich and can just give stuff away. Only a select few pros make a living out there so if they have so many balls they are not using and can make 50 bucks a ball why wouldn't they do that.

By Gum, he's right!  Dale Earnhardt Jr. should give all the cars GM gives him to away for free!  Tiger should give the golf clubs Nike sends him away for free!  McGuire shoud give the steroids he gets, wait, scratch that one.

Tiger has been giving out more than just his golf clubs.

Well let's see they don't pay a dime for the bowling ball so why should they be able to sell it? If they keep getting free equipment they don't need to sell a ball to buy new equipment. They should be giving the equipment away if they don't use it anymore to under privledged kids with parents that can't afford to buy them bowling balls. For example we have an ex-PBA bowler living in my town that had a bunch of used equipment he donated to our local bowling alley for bowlers on the high school team to use.

The statements are not directed at anybody on this site, that I know of.I have seen four
bowlers get canned from staffs, because they got the equipment free from the company
that they were staff members on, and in return sell the new ones for large profits.

One of the members was a up and coming Jr.Team Member two years ago.The other three
were amateurs staff members. Most contracts state that you can not sell said equipment
new or used. Most staff members are not making their living from being on company
staffs. They are getting a chance to get free equipment before anyone else.Use it to bowl
in leagues any tournaments, with a chance to win money. This a opportunity that only
a very small minority of bowlers every year will ever get a chance to do.

I can not say which companies do not have any problem with or which ones do.I only know
that a few do not like this.
My problem is, why that a chance on a few bucks, when you can get canned by the company
and lose the chance for free equipment. Then you will have to go out and buy your own equipment
.

Most of them under contract, are not suppose to sell the free or cut rate equipment that they are getting. If they do give something away, the staffer is suppose to contact their company with the serial number that was on the ball. I have heard of issues taking place where free equipment was sold and then the buyer shot an honor score and the serial number got back to the manufacturer and the staffer was questioned on how that person got the ball that was issued to them.

It is equivalent to giving away the newspaper you purchased.  It reduces
the company's circulation.

O I agree that they should give it away to privledged kids or a high school that is going to use it but to Joe blow who just wants a free ball no he should have to pay for it.

well of course but i feel if they are selling the equipment they should donate the money. Staff members should make absolutely ZERO profit from these free bowling balls. Just my opinion.

Depending who your with as a staffer your equipment isn't even allowed to be given away.  Takes business away from shops.  But I completely agree..I don't pay for any of my track equipment unless I order extra and I wouldn't feel right if I sold it to make money.

Dave,

If I might ask, what does the contract say you're supposed to do with balls you don't use any more? If you cannot say, I understand. Thanks.

I have been on a few staffs in my time and I have never heard of not being able to give bowling balls away after your are done with them. BUT, some company I don''t know about might have that clause.

Now to answer the question

Selling of equipment, please do realize that just because someone is on staff doesn''t mean EVERYTHING is free. They also do have to pay to get those bowling balls drilled and that is an expense to them. I know when I was on staff, I sold a few bowling balls for $35 which was the exact amount I had to pay for drilling. I didn''t make a profit off these bowling balls, but recouped my expenses. There were many I gave away to kids or people I felt could use them more then I did at the time.

I know there are many PBA members that are on staff that do this same thing. Drilling as many balls as they do each season, they billed up a huge expense bill with drilling alone. So this is a great way for them to get that money back. Plus it gets a ball into someones hands fairly cheap!

I wonder what happened to the equipment for those who were on staff with Track and Columbia 300 when Ebonite purchased Columbia 300 Industries?  My understanding was, all the players got their contracts null and voided instantly.  Did they have to give all their equipment back to Ebonite since they voided the players' contract?  Would be interesting to hear from those that had this happened to.  Are all the bowling ball companies that someone well known and hopefully will be in the PBA hall of fame someday places their equipment on Ebay knocking on their door?  I highly doubt it.  You also have to realize, some if not most don't own a pro shop so they still have to pay for the drilling even on the equipment truck. I disagree that it disrespects the company for selling their equipment if it's used.  No profit is gained in most instances and they are just trying to get back what their expenses were for tax purposes.  However, with new equipment, I can understand if their contract gets pulled.
