Starting a PBA experience league
« on: May 01, 2009, 02:57:29 PM »
Sup people! We will starting a PBA Experience league for the summer, and I need help finding some by-laws to bring to our first meeting. I will do some research and what not on USBC's site, but it'd be a great help to get some real world insight. Also, folks have been (and still are...) throwing up this issue that you only can get a "true" PBA shot with Brunswick lanes and equipment. Well, our house is an AMF house and I'm sure that all the house's they pros bowl in aren't Brunswick lanes. I've spoke with USBC's Dick Vermilyea(sp) and he says it can be done...period. I'd like to know if anyone has had to squash this issue as well. Many thanks in advance.

You don't need anything special for PBA leagues.  Standard league rules should apply without any problems.  You might need some clarifications if you plan on having people move pairs from game to game, or if you have head to head matches in a singles league.

You can use any oil machine that is capable of putting out the intended pattern.  A couple of years ago, the PBA used a Kegel oil machine now I think they use a Brunswick one.  It's not like every house that runs PBA leagues got rid of their expensive Kegel machine after the switch.  The PBA goes to different cities and bowls on all lane surfaces, so whoever said you need to be all Brunswick is smoking something.  Now depending on the lane surface, you might need to tweak the patterns a bit if you want them to play like you expect.  The PBA has several versions of each named pattern for when they play on different surfaces.  Brand new synthetic Pro Anvilane, middle aged SPL's, and older wood will all play very different even if the same pattern is applied.

That is correct.

You might go to the Kegel site and look at the patterns.  Underneath many of the AMF houses are originally Brunswick.  The PBA is now using th Brunswick A22 lane machine.  We looked at one last year and they are expensive also.  We opted for a Kegel Custodian+ at about half the price.  A couple of years ago the PBA had a national tour stop at our AMF center in Irving Texas.  Brunswick A2 pinsetters and wood lanes.  They brought their own lane machines of course.
