starting bowling again after 15 years away, help

I stopped bowling in the late 80's. At that time I kept
a 190 ave. and was a down and in bowler, inside line
only if the lanes were dry. I started bowling again a
month ago with the same equip. (columbia u dots and nail ).
I can not get a swing area to the pocket. Have lane conditions
changed this much? I am a cranker and use highly polished
balls. Grateful for any advise!

phil1776--You quit bowling during the time of short oil.  No longer than 24' if I remember right.  We are supposedly now under SOB <system of bowling> 3 unit rule.  Every board supposed to have 3 units and most proprieitors put down a puddle over 50 units in middle and keep outside of 10 on the drier side.  This is what most of us call china or Great Wall of China at the track area.  Under the SOB you can run any length as long it supposedly has 3 units on it.  Typically many houses run anywhere fro 37' to 42'.  As you can see there is a BIG difference on most THS lane conditions than during the short oil days when most bowlers used under reactive NOT to be confused with "reactive" and shiny urethane like you have.  I think this explanation of the difference in lane conditions will give you somewhere to start and go from there to find equipment that will match up to your game and the conditions you bowl on.

Phil, in the last 15 years, you have missed a LOT!

Good luck. I am sure you were a good player in the late 80s, and keep doing what you know how to do, it will eventually come to you.

The equipment we use today in 2004 is so much stronger, even compared to just a little more than 5 years ago. We have equipment in which the coverstock is made of ceramic particles to have a solid grip on the lane, as well as plasticizers that are used in reactive equipment to make it more porous and grip the lane better, too.

Also, lane conditions have changed. The general consensus of the bowling world today uses Sanction Technology to condition their lanes- the same way a inkjet printer would print paper- it's that accurate now. Also, the oil product themselves are much thicker, too. Also, the volume of oil being used is much higher - both for protection and the business aspect of the sport.

phil, i gave up bowling for 16 years and started again 1 year ago. yes, they have changed that much. you will find it quite interesting once you try a modern bowling ball. i would make one suggestion that will save you time and money. before you buy a ball have a reputable driller watch you bowl. i wasted alot of $ on balls that didn't match my style/ability/conditions. just my 2 cents.
