Starting new scratch leageu
« on: July 18, 2013, 07:50:49 AM »
I live in an area where there are plenty of scratch capable bowlers, but no one wants to bowl a scratch league anymore. What are some ideas for starting up a scratch league again, or at least running a monthly/bi-weekly sweeper or some sort to get the interest back up and going?

Honestly the majority of the country has this problem. Bowlers feel if they do not have handicap they have less advantage of winning. The very good bowlers will bowl in them leagues but the normal say 200-210 bowlers wont. They feel they will be dominated by a 215=220 bowler which isnt true. Its sad but true if they don't have a way to hustle a win they don't want to bowl at all.

Getting one started is the trick.  Best way to go is to pick a slow time for the bowling alley and see if you can get a break on lineage.  Make the league fee something fairly large (20-25 dollars a night).  You'll draw people with money.  You can disguise the lineage break by saying that the center is adding money to the prize fund, that will attract more attention.  Do a 30 point system with an eliminator and match play, that way people can still make a fair amount of money even if their team isn't at the top of the league.  Do brackets and side pots, that way the big boys can get their competition and money fix, and the people who don't want to mess with all that can still just bowl the league.  Do anything you can to find sponsors, even somebody that will give you 500 bucks for hanging their banner or putting a card on the sweep is a good start.  The more added money you can advertise the better.  Yeah it's a lot of work, but you can build something that makes people say, "even if you finish last in the league you still make twice as much as you would winning another regular league."  Like I said, money draws people.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

You can also set it up with a draft.  I.e. the top 10 Yearbook averages are the Team captains.  Have a round where captains choose from low avg to high avg.  After round one the teams are lined up by avg again with low combined avg picking first.  Then during league, establish the line-up from low avg to high avg.
