Is a higher top weight supposed to add to your ball speed, in some manner or form?
or
if not, then what factor of your slower ball speed is a higher top weight supposed to cure?

Years ago the theory was that more top weight made the ball skid more and the less top weight made it roll earlier.

So if you had a slow ball speed, you most likely needed help getting the ball down the lane. IE: more skid

It's old school thinking from years ago and is basically meaningless today.

Given he has a slow ball speed, he should be looking at balls with a higher RG and use with less surface to help get the ball to go longer.

When you have a slow speed and use a low RG ball you would be fighting the ball to get it far enough down the lane before it hooked to the pocket.

A little sarcasm, but mostly trying to learn what the driller's implication was. I was going to say the same thing as aloarjr, that top weight virtually meaningless to get additional length, unless you using a pancake core

If you're playing the right part of the lane, and
1. If they're weak 7 (lefty) or 10 (rightly), the ball is rolling too early. Either make the cover smoother or add a little polish.
2. If they're ringing leaves, in general, the ball is going too far before getting into a roll.
A minor adjustment of the surface will handle that. Make it slightly rougher than it is.

Lighter weight ball creates more speed which is important in today's game

Thinking about going to 14 pounds but right now I will try surface adjustment since with the new balls static weight is not important as it use to be.

I know of several bowlers who dropped to 14lbs. in the last 2 years and they all seem to be dong pretty well with it. From joe bowlers to PBA50.

I, on the other hand, went up in weight per Rico and it has been working out. I'm not throwing darts anymore.....
