State banning league pots, brackets,etc.
« on: April 04, 2009, 02:03:55 PM »
I was just told by a friend that all pots, brackets, etc have been banned in 3 of our local houses in NJ. Something to do with either the state gaming commission or a related party. Nationwide's local owner was fined 30K.

Anyone else dealing with this? Really wondering the real reason behind it.

Amazing. Are they hoping people spend that $20-75 a week on Lotto tickets instead. Hasn't been an issue in the 25 years I have bowled.

Are they going to crack down on tourneys to??

No Larry, my leagues are in Bergen County so it must be a state thing.

A shame if this holds up.

They did this in MI about 10 years ago for awhile. We figured out that it was the gaming commissions occupation justification. There was some talk of cutting several positions out of the gaming commission at that time. So, they started busting bowling centers & leagues.

The one that made the front page of the newspaper was when they arrested a grandmother after "winning" $9 in a mystery game in her senior citizens league. There was such an uproar, the gambling commission backed off.

So it sounds like NJ is doing the same thing. They will have their fun, act all big & bad, then when the public starts complaining to there local polititians, they will back off and disappear until they need to justify their existance again.

Believe it or not they have attempted to do this in Las Vegas also.  Something
to do with the gaming laws.  The casinos are behind it.  We get around the law
by playing different games with it--calling it something else, etc.  It can be
done.

In MI way back it was only mystery, 50/50, strike ball, or anything based on luck to win and not skill. Couldn't even play cards. Now I believe they limit how much can be won on all of these.

Guys...it's actually games of chance.  Pots, doubles and brackets are ok.  It's things like 50/50 strike balls, card games and mystery doubles that have been banned.  Which doesn't really make it better, but at least there is still something.

They did this in Florida about 20 years ago. It was linked to the House's Liquor license, No card games / brackets or split the pot, I moved from there right after, so not sure if it's still the case. Here in Ohio it does not seem to be illegal.

At Holiday Bowl in New Jersey this morning, there were signs up and announcements made that no league is allowed to sell 50/50's, card games, side pots, mystery doubles, strike ball, miss a spare...nickel in the kitty, etc. It really changed the complexion of the leagues. Rather than worry about the major things that are going on in this country, their coming after bowlers who don't hurt anybody. This is without a doubt, one of the stupidest things I've ever heard of, and makes me ashamed to be from New Jersey.

i am surprised you weren't ashamed already. i know i have been for a while.

Depending on the state, as long as the state does not accept a portion of the pot, it is not illeagle.

I'm in agreement with Bshannon .. I was told it was tied in some way to the Liquor license .. do all the centers involved have BARS?

In NJ, all groups, even not for profit such as a church, need a license to hold games of chance. The state wants their cut, and they are serious about it.
