State of Bowling-Shooting a Mega-Series

What's everyones take on so many Mega-Series (850+) being bowled lately. Within the past 2 weeks here we have had an 876 shot by a 2handed pheonom, an 867 by a local standout and an 856 shot by a 2finger no thumber.  Is it the conditions are too easy, technology that good, or what do you think. Don't get me wrong these bowlers are scratch bowlers and always put 2-3 of these series up a year, the 2 hander I think is averaging now 261. He just shot a 783 last night, just average. What does it take to roll one of these high scores. I know good pba regional guys whose high series is a low 800 and never got close to the monsters these guys are putting up. So my question to everyone is what do you think it takes to consistently roll Mega-Series.

 Lots of power, and a wide open lane condition.  Add in consistency, and you have the formula for lots of really big sets.

A center that will not toughen the shot!  One of mine is making ours less like china...no ones happy about it, but its fun, for example, seeing 'team we average 240' shoot a high of 611 on their team lol.

We're throwing "grenades" at the pins on "wide open" patterns. I'm not surprised at all.

How do these guys do on a challenging condition? that's the real question.
wide open patterns do nothing for improving your game.
might sell a couple more beers afterwards, but you are fooling yourself when it comes to tournaments if all you bowl on is a wide open china pattern

The combination of easy house conditions and powerful bowling balls results in high scores.  The balls are so strong now that a bowler does not need to have a high powered release.  The release needs to be consistent.  You also need to have a lot of good luck.

I would be considered a lower rev player.  Yet I was able to bowl a mega-series last year (866 with 35 of 36 strikes).  If you sacrifice consistency to have a powerful release, your scores will suffer.

The challenging conditions also reward consistency and not power.

We've been over this before, and everytime I say something like this I get shut down.  Bowling is too easy, period, and the scoring pace is a major factor in why people don't bowl.  They either get bored, or can't compete with those kinds of numbers and either quit, or beg for more handicap.  It's out of control, it's driving people away, and devaluing those scores at the same time.

That my point giz, what is making bowling so easy. Technology, conditions? Not that game is any easier, I believe technology is making all the scores go thru roof.

I disagree with pretty much everyone here....

Yes conditions are too easy...but are the THAT easier than 10 years ago?

Yes the ball are great....but are they THAT much better than 10 years ago?

What has really changed to cause the flood in mega sets?

Think back a few years (10 or so) and how much you had to adjust during a 3 game set.  Now think about how much you're having to move?  I shot 800 last night in league....I bowl 3 games a week....don't practice...so how does that happen?  I literally moved 3 with my feet the entire night.  I camped out in the same part of the lane and just hoped my carry didn't leave me.

10 years ago I would chew my own line up in 8 frames or so and end up moving a minimum of 10 boards in a 3 game set.  With those adjustments it was nearly impossible to throw monster sets as your look would change just enough to keep you from carrying that well.  Now you can keep a very similar look for a long period of time.

Just my thoughts....the oils are getting too good.

Put the best equipment of today on a difficult pattern and the "ease" of the game will cease.  I bowled all summer on several WTBA patterns and found them very difficult for a THS bowler like myself.  I averaged about 20-25 pins less...

There are a lot of factors.  People are now more educated.  Out of box surfaces are less aggressive, meaning less track wear.  Also like Russell said, the oils are getting better.  Almost every house you go to now has synthetics.  Lane machines are better.  Bowling ball technology, though largely unCHANGED, has been tinkered with and adjusted.  Again, however, clay has it nailed here.  The lane pattern is the single largest factor in scoring.  But of course if you know how to do it and work together, any tough pattern can be turned into a house shot in about 15 minutes . .

I bowled at a house where we woul;d make 15 board moves as the night went on and we didnt see many honor scores at all. In the 5 years i bowled there I saw 4 300 games and 2 800's....

We changed leagues, went to a house with a short oil pattern, but the lanes are brand new and the shot never moves. Bowled two weeks so far and the most I have moved is 2 boards all night, thats with 10 guys on the lane. The scores have been stupid. We moved 5 teams from our old league to the new league and two of the guys who in 5 years never shot a game over 250 have had a 279 and we have seen 4 300 games in the first two weeks.....

So I agree that if the shot doesnt change throughout the night and people dont have to adjust or move...then the scoring pace is stupid high.

I had been watching the score posted on here over the last few years thinking damn these guys are good....not realizing I was bowling on a much more difficult shot. Not that the shot itself was difficult, but that the shot was gone in 8 frames and then we were moving 5 boards at a time every 6-8 frames after that.

Im purely expecting to shoot multiple honor scores this year, I normally dont like short oil patterns but as long as I can sit in one spot all night, im going to light it up all year....

It is primarily the power of the balls.  Biggest problem with so called too easy house shots is that they are very one dimensional and do not promote the ability to develop versatility.  Scores per se are not the issue. 

I always ask this question.  If a guy can beat me by 10 pins a game on a house shot, but I can beat him by 10 pins a game on a flat pattern, who is better. 

Biggest problem with THS, is that hook is addictive.  THS allows bowlers to hook the ball way more than is necessary, then they can't square up when the swing is not there.

I disagree, sure you have some house hacks who can only "solve" their house shot, but you put a decent bowler on any non-sport THS with friction on the outside and they will score big within a game or so. The concept is the same.

By the way, the Caps Lock key is the one right above the left side Shift key.  ;D
