I agree that re-rating should not occur in the middle of a tournament. But, there is usually a clause stating the tournament director has the right to re-rate as necessary. I was a victim to this back in the late 80's. I joined a club and had an entering average. All verified. No sandbagging. As I practiced more and more, I became a better bowler. While bowling these tournaments, my average started to increase with this club as they started to adjust my average based on the tournament games. They normally bowled and houses that didn't take that good of care of the lanes. I had been bowling with this club for about 7 months. I had shot a few honor scores in league before I bowled this one tournament. I won that tournament and during that tournament I shot another honor score. The next weekends tournament, I bowled well in qualifying. I came back the next day to bowl the semi's and the tournament director approached me and advised me I was being re-rated prior to the semi's. I had questioned this and advised them I understand about having to re-rate me but how can you re-rate me in the middle of a tournament. I stated I can understand if it would be for future tournaments but not in the middle of one. Of course, they pull out the by-laws and sure enough there was this clause. Now, as most clubs go, if you are not in the 'in crowd' of the tournament director, you can get screwed multiple ways. I had also expressed my concerns about others who haven't been re-rated and they always seem to make the semi's most weeks and always seem to have the same average. Needless to say, when I bowled the semi's I bowled good but missed making the stepladder finals by 8 pins. Had I not been re-rated, I would have made the finals. I bowled in this club for the next month and decided enough was enough.
