Ball for New Bowler

my dad will be bowling in his first bowling league ever and has bowled maybe 5 times his whole life (he's 52). I finally convinced him to get into it for male bonding time Tuesday nights. he is going to get a ball drilled up this coming week and i want to make sure he gets the right type. I want him to get drilled for fingertip but dont want a ball thats unmanageable on the lanes. I'm going to teach him to go straight down the second arrow with a small backend move into the pocket. what ball would you suggest here? I was thinking maybe a tropical storm or hammer cherry vibe or brunswick avalanche. something weak on the backend and with length but a ball that will be fun for him. we will be on a second shift league with wood lanes. any help here would be great, thanks!

Hey thanks for everyones commenting, this really helps to get other opinions aside from mine and my pro shop. I think he is going to get a Jazz/Power Groove/ or Tornado with a conventional grip. Right now it's a matter of footwork, release, hitting his mark, following through and understanding spare pick-ups in relation to ball release/approach positioning. Perhaps once these skills are improved, we may move to fingertip drilling then to a more reactive ball.

When you think he's ready for a fingertip grip have your driller plug the finger holes and redrill to the new spans and sizes.  After he's gotten used to it you can move him to a mid-level ball.  --  JohnP

IMO go straight to fingertip..  learn the right way..  why go to conventional and then later learn fingertip?

It's easier to develop accuracy with a conventional grip.  Also, it doesn't require as much hand/wrist strength.  --  JohnP

I would go with something not too flippy. Some of the entry level reactives want to bounce off the dry. An Avalanche solid is a good choice. As is the Onyx vibe. Anything that wants to roll earlier will help with control while he is learning. I'm inclined to think fingertip would be better as well. Conventional grip has a tendency to release from the fingers and the thumb at the same time. This is not conducive to the release being consistent.
