The day in the life of a bowling proprietor...
« on: August 06, 2009, 12:13:57 PM »
So far in the last 24 hrs I have done the following.

Moved 12 ball racks with balls to a new location.
Painted an 18 ft. wall and cleaned up.
Moved 10 booths of seating.
Repaired and tested a scoring issue on lane 11.  Replaced a camera, circuit board, IO board and cables.
Prepped the cafe. Cut up onions, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.etc. Our cook just got out of the hospital so I cooked all weekend.
Drilled a ball and sold a bag and pair of shoes.
Ran the counter and cafe for a 30 person daycare.
Mopped up spills.
Made my usual amount of 8 to 10 phone calls.
Ordered beer and Ben E. Keith among the phone calls.  Had to figure out what to order.
Shopped for hamburger meat, tomatoes and cold drinks for the cafe.  $1.79 a pound for tomatoes is just wrong.
and finally greeted our bowlers when they came through the door.
Answered birthday party questions.  Prepared for calling the parents of all youth bowlers and got ready for a parade.
The days not over.

Just a day in the life.....

Oh yeah and that too!  One of the things I have learned from buying this bowling center is that many bowlers have no idea what actually goes on behind the scenes.  There are many a night I may be cooking your hamburger and 20 minutes later resetting a 4 pin.  Some nights I drill a ball and cook the fries then vacuum the floor at close of the day.

We have plenty of help.  There is a lot of things to do in a center.  I am a hands on kind of person.  I hired a new B mechanic and about 2 months after working for us he asked for a Brunswick A2 service manual and a parts guide.  I told him I didn't need to order one and he gave me a blank look.  I had two new ones sitting on my desk.  He was in shock.  I like to be able to do just about everything in the center.  Saves money and cost to the bowlers.

Why would any customer care what you do?  Either service is provided or it
isn't.  Who does what is irrelevant.

Because he might care what the costomer thinks. Also As a bowler when I see an owner going to do stuff around the center that makes me think he cares about the place.

Yes, you would not want to get hamburger grease on the 4 pin. It might slide right around the 7 pin on the next high pocket hit!!!

I was always impressed by a owner/manager who would do anything when and if it was needed. The previous manager at our local AMF center would do anything, he was a good bowler and would respond to special requests as needed, work the snack bar, chase pins etc. But, for some reason he was let go. The newest manager has not been seen since her first day when she went around introducing herself!

Go Figure!

Not to say this is the case, but one can also see this as the owner not willing to hire and staff the amount of people necessary to do the job.  I have seen many a center where staffing is so low, the Manager, GM, or even the owner is required to do something not typically in his/her job description.  And then something comes up that actually requires that person's attention and that menial task is now ignored.  Not saying you are like this Smash, but I have seen it.  Too many times I have seen a cut in staffing as the answer to financial gain.
