Lane Masters = AZO?
« on: March 22, 2011, 09:44:37 PM »
I saw an AZO Fantasy X bowling ball with "Lane Masters" stamped into it.  Does anyone know if Lane Masters ever manufactured a ball under the AZO label?   Is AZO an offshoot of Lane Masters?   I believe that Storm now "makes" AZO equipment.  Was "Lane Masters" simply a line of AZO balls at one time.

Thanks for any help as I can't find any info online about this.

AFAIK, before there was Lanemasters, there already was AZO. These balls were of similar massive (non-filler) construction like the later LM balls, which evolved as a separate high end brand, and the old AZO balls also relied heavily on particle technology. The brand vanished and two years ago or so, after a kind of hibernation and with Storm-produced balls (and with that a totally different design philosophy, yet with an oversized price tag), appeared again. I think the new AZO was mainly intended as an overseas brand.

Anyway, the balls from the two eras are VERY different things. IMHO good balls, though.

Lane Masters came into existence by buying the old AZO manufacturing line. During the initial transition, AZO made the first few Lanemasters balls which were copies of existing AZO balls (Red Fire, Blue Fire). They, LM, used AZO's urethane cores (most of the patented "crack" at the pins was due to that type of core). Eventually the AZO name went away and there was only Lane Masters. Storm bought the AZO name a couple of years ago.

There were a couple of versions of the Fantasy X, a caramel one and a black one for sure, maybe others.  Both were good, but the black one was a hook monster!  --  JohnP

All of the below information is correct. If you get a chance to pick up the black Fanyasy-X, please do so. You will not be dissappointed! I have one and it still puts out that patented "crack" sound at the pin-deck!

I consider mine a tournament ball.
