I can say YES THEY CAN!!!!

If its an accidental drop, chances are less likely but if your slamming it down on the cement floor (tile or thin layered carpet) the ball can crack. I have cracked 4 balls when I was angry in my younger ages by slamming it down after either making bad shots or just bowling horrible period. It depends on where the ball hits on the ground if they will crack or not, if your near the finger holes it will be easy to crack it, if its on the other side of the ball, probably will not crack at all.

Would never do in the center; did it in my own basement.

Nope; doesn't really make much difference, though, does it?

Only in the context of your comment about being surprised.  Makes me kinda wonder which coverstock was on the ball.

I dropped my purple Vibe a couple of months back in the garage while practicing my swing.  The ball was a bit cold at the time, too.  It didn't crack then, but a couple days later there was a nice 4-5" crack running up from the ring finger.

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

The funny thing with this is that I have seen balls literally bounced 6 feet into the air off of concrete and not crack.

I have seen balls crack wide open while sitting on a shelf not being touched for a year.

I guess when it is your balls time to go it will split and leave you.

funny you should ask this.  was cleaning the cellar out the other day and cam across a couple of balls with some cracks in them.  took them to a local bridge and tossed them onot a concrete flood chute.  50 foot drop.  oh yeah, they exploded into little bitty pieces.  not sure why I did this but had a bad day bowling that morning so it felt good.

The first resin ball I ever got, a Crush/R, got a pretty good 1/8" crack  completely around it just sitting in my closet. So I figured I'd see if I could crack it completely open to see what the core looked like. My friend and I used to take it out at halftimes of a few Packer games and bowl it down our road, threw it, bounced it and basically did anything we could think of to get it to break. Got plenty of ugly chips in it and did crack slightly around the finger holes, but it really is amazing the amount of abuse that bowling balls can take. Never did get it to crack completely open to see the core....
I would think it would just depend on the particular ball. Some coverstocks are notoriously more fragile (think Paradigm with all it's cracking problems) while others could probably take whatever you throw at them within reason. Just dropping it probably won't do it....slamming it... maybe.

They must have exploded since there already was cracks in them. I think a ball could survive a 50ft fall, maybe not in concrete though.
