The first resin ball I ever got, a Crush/R, got a pretty good 1/8" crack completely around it just sitting in my closet. So I figured I'd see if I could crack it completely open to see what the core looked like. My friend and I used to take it out at halftimes of a few Packer games and bowl it down our road, threw it, bounced it and basically did anything we could think of to get it to break. Got plenty of ugly chips in it and did crack slightly around the finger holes, but it really is amazing the amount of abuse that bowling balls can take. Never did get it to crack completely open to see the core....
I would think it would just depend on the particular ball. Some coverstocks are notoriously more fragile (think Paradigm with all it's cracking problems) while others could probably take whatever you throw at them within reason. Just dropping it probably won't do it....slamming it... maybe.
