Please Help In Pain
« on: August 20, 2007, 10:59:18 PM »
Okay about 20 years ago I took a header while bowling and hyper-extended my throwing elbow went to the doctor received some scripts and 4 cortisone injections. Now about mid-May I started having trouble w/ it again, the doctor said it was tendonitis and to use hot and cold therapy. I thought ok no problem I can do that, it's worse now than when the pain started in May. He said the tests(MRI etc..) came back as a mild case and he's reluctant to prescribe anything because it's not severe enough, but the pain is traveling up my arm towards my wrist. Did I do the therapy wrong(20min hot & 20min cold) any advice would be helpful & thanks in advance for it.

First, I'm not a doctor but I had a problem which may or may not be the same as yours. While bowling, I had what is called an epicondilitis (the spelling may be wrong), also known as a Tennis elbow. I had a cortisone injection and after that I had to wear an arm brace (worn below the elbow)for about a year. While bowling with that arm brace, I had no pain at all and I stopped using it after about one year. Now it's been three years since I got that problem and everything is perfect. I even increased my average and I bowl 20 games a week with no problem. Like I said, your problem may be worse than mine but maybe you should try the arm brace which is cheap anyway. I hope you can remedy that situation and continue bowling. You can contact me anytime for further information.

Are there any more doctors in town?  You may want another opinion as to how to treat it, but unfortunately bowling is usually not prescribed.  Along with the therapy they usually prescribe rest.

Maybe taking sometime off would help. Do the therapy that the doctor suggested, but do not bowl.

I know that I had to take time off due to back injury. I tried to bowl through it, but that did not work. Took the time off and came back better since I had no pain to hinder my delivery.

I'm not a Dr. ( but I did stay at a Holiday Express about a year ago) rest, and the occasional Ibuprofen, there are neo-preen braces for your elbow that deliver heat to the affected areas. Give it a try

The tendonitis elbow straps work to relieve the pain temporarily.I had the same problem as you a few years ago. It came from throwing the ball too hard. I also had 2 cortisone injections in my elbow but they didn't help at all. Hate to say it but the only thing that helped me was a year layoff from bowling. Now that I've dropped to 15# and throw the ball slower it hasn't returned.

I went for a second opinion today turns out the first doc was a idiot according to this one I should've had at least 2 injections, been prescribed anti-inflamatories, & a brace(I've been wearing one since last summer as protection against this very thing) by now so he gave me one injection and I go back for another next week. He also said to take a month or two off.

20 minutes on and 20 minutes off is safe when applying warm to cool therapy.

Heat causes the capillary blood vessels to relax and expand allowing blood to pool in the inflamed/injured area - so more blood = faster healing?  Yes, but not if the area is still getting larger.  If you are more swollen and hurt more after using heat I say leave it off.  Your blood is already 98 degrees, which is plenty of heat already.  Cold makes the blood vessles smaller decreasing blood flow to the injury.  Enough continuous cold and the pain goes away - too much cold and a deep burn injury happens.

Tendonitis is a repetative motion injury.  Something you do is causing the injury.  Is it hyper-extention during the down-swing.

Does the ball swing you - or - do you swing the ball?

Do you feel your elbow during the down-swing - you are not supposed to feel your elbow during any part of the swing.  Are you pulling the ball because your feet are abit too fast? If you are not sure - try a ball that is 2 pounds lighter.

In any event, a lighter ball would decrease the stress on the injured area.

Good luck and good healing.

Call your MD and ask him to send you to Physical Therapy. If he is not willing to do that than I would ask for a second opinion and see a Orthopedic MD.
