Shoulder pain?
« on: February 03, 2011, 05:49:45 AM »
I have been plaugued with shoulder pain for almost two years now. First off, surgery is not an option. I do not see a need to go to a doctor and spend money on something that only bothers me while bowling and maybe a day or so after. The pain radiates on the outside part of  my right shoulder on the ball. I have found that I can get through a night of bowling with between 5-7 shots of Fireball. In the past I have deferred from drinking. The change has not really effected my average. I was wondering if anyone has had similar pain and what was done? I believe it to be arthritis. I limit the amount of NSAID's I take because of the toll they take on liveranf /kidneys. I love to bowl but will quit if surgery is needed to bowl. If bowling is the cause, either I change my style to stop the pain or quit. I am a tweener with slow to average ball speed. I do put some rev's on the ball, but would say they were around average to slightly higher. The more I have to cup the ball the more pain I have the next day. I might add I have similar pain in left shoulder, but nothing that keeps me awake at night like my right. That is why I am leaning towards arthritis. I am really looking at a homeopathic cure. Exercises and vitamins/minerals.

My similar pain started end of November last year. Like you I had it in the right shoulder (I'm right handed) and it seemed to move across my back effecting one shoulder or the other. It got so that I could not turn my head to the right .. after almost having an auto accident (not being able to turn my head to the right I didn't see an approaching auto .. I was lucky we both stopped in time) I went to my doctor.

He diagnosed it as MUSCEL SPASMS!

He gave me a prescription for a muscle relaxer  I took a few weeks off from bowling and I'm now pain free! What you describe seems to be very much what I had.

He also recommended HEAT .. Good luck!

Thank you! I can turn my neck but my range of motion in shoulder is mostly effeted when I raise my arm out from my side. I can feel and see my muscles twitching at time right below the area where pain is generated. I have some flexoril from a back injury last year. Maybe I will try that.

Tendonitis/Bursitis.  If pushed too far for too long that can lead to further complications like a tear in the rotator cuff which will end your bowling for a loooong time. Mine started as intermittent pain but has become a nonstop bother. I recently switched to using my left hand and will be in physical therapy for 6-8 weeks. Don't be bullheaded and think you can accurately diagnose your ailment.

Exactly. Pain is a sympton that something is wrong, and even if bowling is the only time it hurts right now, that doesn't mean you can't do further damage to it. For example, my dad's tolerance for pain is really high, and his elbow and arm only hurt him at first when bowling, but then it got to be more and more frequent and his arm started getting weaker. It turns out he had tendenitis, but also had torn ligaments and it was getting worse with more use. Surgery was required, and it took him a couple years to fully heal, but now his arm is back to normal, and he is bowling without elbow pain and in fact bowling better than ever (he's shot three 300s in the past year and had one 799 series, he never had 300 before that, and never even come close to 800 before).

"I do not see a need to go to a doctor and spend money on something that only bothers me while bowling and maybe a day or so after. "

So instead, you come onto BR looking for in-depth orthopedic medical advise......

The shoulder is a complex joint. A thousand different things could be causing your pain. The fact that it isn't going away over time by itself should set off some red flags to get some specialized diagnosis.

I currently have some serious shoulder problems with symptoms similar to yours that are preventing me from bowling right now. Go to an Orthopedic Specialist and get checked. It doesn't automatically mean surgery. The money you're spending on bowling will cover professional diagnostics, so don't be cheap. Take care of yourself for the long haul.

Go see an orthopedist.  You may have a rotator cuff tear.  I am working on recovering from a slight tear and my symptoms sound exactly like what you seem to be experiencing.
