target area or specific target?
« on: October 15, 2012, 06:55:30 PM »
I use a specific target when I bowl, 2nd arrow, 13 board, 22nd board...etc \
Several guys i know are area bowlers, targeting between this and that, and they are really good, way better than me.  If I miss my target by a board or 2, i'm way off at the pins, but why is that?  I'm still in the "area" of my target, but my result is far from favorable.  What do you guys do, target, entry point, break etc?
Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question.

I am a target area bowler and look at the lane as being just 3 sections....left, middle, and right.

Sure...the boards are there, and targeting the right section versus the middle is [to me] about the same as changing the target by about 10-15 boards to the right. And I don't see this method as being superior or inferior to targeting a specific point on the lane.  It just works for me....except sometimes when it doesn't.   :)

Downside is when bowling poorly, it's difficult for others to help, cause they will talk in terms of boards and I tend to not listen. On the other hand....  bowlers that are trying to hit a precise spot, seem to get aggravated more easily when the ball doesn't behave the way they think it should. It's like they're saying to themselves that they threw it over the such and such dot or over a certain arrow, so how can that not be a strike?

I, on the other hand, will just figure that I need to adjust within my area somewhat.

3 sections? So your area is 13 boards? Houuuuuse shot.

Area bowlers usually have a loose swing due to not having to hit a mark.

Art, i have had the same issue. However, i often find that when you're trying to be too fine with shots, you mentally take yourself out of the game. THS is designed to give you room, and being too fine on them is making the shot harder than what it's supposed to be. You might be playing the lanes in the wrong area, or throwing the ball too hard in that area you playing. I practiced this last night after a pedestrian 612 set and leaving 7-7pins, an 8, 9, and 2-10's. Worked on just relaxing, moving a bit deeper and softening the hand. Voìla! Peeled of 6 in a row easily on the same shot I was struggling to carry on. THS is all about what you can take advantage of and some bowlers see it from the other way around. Sometimes you just have to get out of your own way.

As i'm in my approach i'm staring at my mark at the arrows (5-10-13-20 etc), a specific board.  I'll keep my eyes on that point until the ball crosses it.  When the ball crosses it (that mark i'm looking at) i'll pick the ball up with my eyes and watch it's rotation AND it's performance in the mid-lane.  I'll keep my eye on that until the ball reaches the breakpoint (it's widest point), note it, then watch the result.

That's just me.

Rightycomplex,

Maybe the issue wasn't trying to hit a mark, but actually needing to move in and keep your hand soft. That makes the swing more loose as is, so maybe that was your carry issue?

Yea Doom, thats what I was trying to say. When I did relax and soften the hand, I could miss by a couple boards right or left and have ball carry. Whereas before if I missed by the same margin, it was wash out or facing the head.

I have an interesting targeting system, but it works for me quite well.  I'm more concerned about hitting my breakpoint within about a 6" circle...so say my break point is about the 7 board at 41".  I have three boards left and right of that spot at that distance that I am trying to stay within...I find the middle of that point, whatever or wherever it is for the shot I am playing and find the head angle that I need etc, and draw a visual line from the breakpoint to an intermediate target (boards near the arrows for me) and that is what I use as an aiming point during my approach...but fully intending to throw through that point to my breakpoint target.

I use a three point targeting system with the main focus being on the exit point at the end of the oil pattern.  I have no interest in break point at all.  The goal is to hit an exact board at the end of the oil pattern regardless of length.

I tend to use the "spray & pray"... Keeps me focused on what my dance routine will be when I strike... It's all about the image.
