Anything sent in the mail UNSOLICITED is yours to keep forever without paying for it. That is the law. (Check with the USPS. This is, as far as I know, a federal law.)
You didn't ask for it; therefore you don't have to pay for it. They cannot bill you for it. If you ask for the series, then, yes, they can bill you for it. They cannot, by law, as far as I know, bill you for something you did not ask for. If they say anything else, they are lying. They are welcome to send someone to come pick it up from you but you don't have to make one effort to return it to them. It's a scam, just another scam..
Unless your wife has a returned signed receipt, there is no evidence that she returned it. I think the effort she made in good faith is wasted.
