PBA oil volumes for Chameleon, Scorpion patterns
« on: August 05, 2014, 09:55:14 PM »
Just curious, does anyone know what is the oil volumes for these patterns?

I was looking at the PBA50 event in Indiana today. They're bowling on the Scorpion pattern (47 feet), and it appeared to be like a longer Cheetah pattern perhaps with a medium volume. Did not this pattern used to have a heavy volume when it was at 41 feet?

Then I saw during last year's WSOB Chameleon event (43 feet) in which the oil volume was heavy. Did not this pattern used to be at 41 feet and with a medium volume?

Chameleon (43') = 26.4 mL

Scorpion (47') = 26.1 mL

This is according to our PBA league sheet.  I didn't copy the forward/reverse ratio.  I'm sure the true PBA patterns play different.  Plus the lanes, oil, and oil machine can have a huge impact on how the final pattern plays.

The one that confuses me is the new Viper (39', 33.4 mL).  The outside is much slicker than the old version, but once you start moving in, the pattern hooks quite a bit.  Considering it's the highest volume of all the PBA patterns, I can't figure it out.  I've only thrown on it twice, but it doesn't seem to fit my game very well.

Strider,

Granted other factors like topography, synthetic or wood, and so forth, that doesn't sound like a LOT of oil when stretched out to 47 feet, or for that matter 43 feet. So it can become pretty tricky very fast, hmmm?

I've seen where the Viper is not a high scoring shot. So they essentially flood the outside (i.e., out of bounds is 8-board to the gutter) and force you to the inside?

Plus, these being discussed are not 1:1 flat patterns, like the Bear and Wolf, right? They're more like in the 2+:1 ratio, so there is a <<little bit>> of hook, if you can find it.

I thought I read where the patterns were different for the PBA vs PBA50?
