Pinky hole
« on: February 28, 2013, 04:36:41 PM »
I am curious to see if anybody has experimented with using a pinky hole, does it stability or ability to put more revs into the shot?  Also what will the extra weight off the fingers do to a balls reaction?

I use a pinky hole, and I can't say enough good things about it.  When I started using it, it was to help me put more rotation on the ball, which it definitely does.  In fact, I feel that the extra finger gives me much more control and repeatability with any release.  I don't know if it officially helps put more revs on the ball, but it feels like it.  It also helps tremendously to keep the ball stable on my hand throughout my swing (I don't use a thumb, so that's a much bigger deal for me).

I couldn't really tell you what the weight difference does reaction-wise, but I can tell you I've had three balls that putting the pinky hole in made the difference between needing a weight hole and not.

Sorry to bring up an old thread.  But I've been wondering about a pinky hole and did a search in the forums.  I like what I'm reading about how it helped some folks but I wonder if it's against any tournament rules to have one?

You can have up to one gripping hole per finger.

You can have 12 holes in a bowling ball.

5 gripping holes (one for each finger)
5 vent holes (one for each finger)
1 weight hole
1 "inspection hole" -- never seen one personally, it was apparently more common 40+ years ago.

I use a pinky hole in every ball I own and I love them. All positives, no negatives about them, IMO.

A vent hole?

Yep, it has to be tiny (I think 5/32" is the max, it may even be 5/64). It's used to prevent a tight-fitting hole from pulling a vacuum on your fingers/thumb. It's much more common on the thumb than the fingers. I use a thumb vent hole in all my equipment in addition to the pinky hole. Cleaned up my release a good bit.
