Are you kidding?  I'd like to believe it as much as anyone else since I am a stroker.  But all the bowlers on tour are virtually crankers, in the sense that they can all turn on the ball when they want to.

I believe the lowest rev rate on tour is 275 RPM, but I'm not sure; I read something about it recently.  Now, I'm not saying revs are everything but they definitely help and I wish I was able to produce more.  Versatility is what makes a great bowler, and Norm Duke is living proof.

Actually, if you read his profile it says he has a sanctioned 300 game.

Maybe, but I was just funnin with him anyway, nothing personal about it.

quote:
Good crankers like good straight players are equally adept at repeating shots with accuracy. The problem for them is that they are forced because of their high rev rates to cross a lot of boards, which in todays fast transition environment can be very difficult. Straighter players sacrifice carry on many conditions, but can keep in the pocket much more easily on longer flatter patterns

This is exactly why I have changed my release so much.  I still get good revs, but my axis tilt and rotation allow me to play straighter and stay in one place longer, making smaller, less drastic adjustments.

i can play up the boards or move inside and rip it but i personally find i get better action and carry from going up the boards i just have less room to miss and i prefer playing up the boards.

Not true. Having the ability to turn the ball doesn't make you a cranker.

I see your point, but what I'm getting at is crankers have high rev rates and just about everyone on tour has a high rev rate.  Some are higher than others obviously, but not everyone can do it.

I am a stroker for life.  As much as I would love to have a ton more messengers kicking out 10 pins, but I make do with what I can.

They have trained a robot to go up the boards with consistency--what next will we have a MONKEY trained to do it? You don't see them throwing a decent inside out shot. Now THAT is bowling!!!

i can do both. i choose to be a high tweener (sometimes cranker) cuz i carry alot better. im not one who flaps all over the place and falls over cuz im trying to put everything into my ball. my form is on the smoother side. i can find my mark and hit it pretty consistantly. i do enjoy the fact that if i get it out too wide my rev rate and axis tilt gets the ball back to hit light and carry. while people sit there with there mouths open wondering how it came back from the 1 board and crushed the pocket. i also find a much more consistant shot playing further left. THE REASON I DONT LIKE TO PLAY STRAIGHTER IS BECAUSE YOUR ADJUSTMENTS DEALS MORE WITH SPEED AS THE LANES BREAK DOWN. THATS ONE THING I DONT LIKE MESSING WITH. i can adjust the revs and tilt on my ball alot better then i can the speed.

In the centers where I bowl, crankers have the highest averages on THS while on PBA patterns, the strokers have the advantage. One 21 year old cranker, who has been bowling for 16 years has a 243 average for the whole past season. It is really amazing to see him bowl.

Using the guys on tour is an unfair comparison. Most of those guys can go from being a stroker to a cranker. They're able to adjust to the conditions and generally find what works for them.

Someone mentioned Walter Ray. He generally plays straighter, but I know I've seen him swinging the lane on rare occasion.

As far as your more amateur bowlers, neither style is the end all be all. It depends on the lane conditions, and the bowler themselves. Also depends on what you are using to compare who is better. Season long avg? High Series?

The Crankers get more carry on THS generally cause they have the extra power and high entry angle to create pin action. On the flip side, they have blow through a rack and leave some nasty spare shots.

Your strokers are generally more consistently leaving 9 counts, but don't get some of the high and light carry that the crankers do.

No one style is better overall. It's just a tool for each individual bowler to use.
