how to know if a ball is too small in diameter?

I have an OLD columbia aftershock that has been resurfaced at least 4 or 5 times, probably more.  Its been plugged 2x, so thats 2 more decent sandings at least.  The ball has ZERO lettering left on it, & the CG mark is gone also.

Any idea how i can definately figure out if this ball is legal or not?

Re-engrave the name of the ball and a serial number (doesn't even have to be the original one) and it will probably be legal.

Usually, though, by the time the logos are gone, it's too small.  If the ball return is having trouble with it, then it's probably too small to be legal.

the only way i know is to take a NIB ball and place it next to the ball in question. Then take a Pro-Sect Quater Scale and placing it on the ball in question, feeling hte resistance, if any, and comparing it to the resistance of the NIB ball. If it is smaller, which it most deffinatly is, you can see how drasticly drifferent it is.

Measure the circumference of it.
Minimum
26.704” - 678.28mm - 67.828cm
Maximum
27.002” - 685.85mm - 68.585cm

I had a bowling center tell me the reason balls get stuck is they are too small.  Of course, at the same center I had a ball pop out the back of a machine, and roll under a table.  Took them at least 30 minutes to find the ball.  I haven't been back since.

Why should an undersize ball be illegal? It seems to me that only the bowler using it will suffer from it. Surely, it will not help him make more strikes. Of course, if it's small enough to get stuck in the ball return, then it's a problem for everyone bowling on the same pair of lanes.

there is a tool that your pro shop should have that measures diameter to tell if its too small. and to just take a shot in the dark, from your description alone it sounds like it is in fact illegal. I dont know exactaly what its called, but I know we have one in our shop lol. that dosnt help you but ask around, it looks like a huge washer/o-ring...

Used to be a ring you could place over the ball to tell wether it was still legal.  Diameter ring might be too simple a name for it...but a gauge like this should work.

When I jokingly complained to my driller that I thought the Xcaliber I bought was too small, he placed the ball on a level surface, placed another ball(from another company)on each side of the Xcaliber, laid a straight-edge over top of all three balls.  The Xcaliber didn't touch the straight-edge and was too small by a bit.
