Shoulder Injury Question....
« on: July 27, 2007, 12:51:43 PM »
Hello, ive recently suffered a shoulder injury while bowling and im trying to find out how severe this is and try to find out exactly what is wrong with me.

I am just about to turn 20 years old. Ive been bowling for about 6 years now. I have a high rev rate, high backswing and of course a pretty decent speed on the ball. I have been averaging about 215-225 for the past year while bowling about 4 nights a week. Ive never really had any injuries, I had a problem with my knee for a little bit but it was something I could bowl with and the pain went away with a little therapy. I recently was bowling league and I threw a ball and I felt a sharp pain in my shoulder. I finished off the game and stopped my bowling. It seemed when I held the ball at the beginning of my approach, (you know away from my body) it was extreamly hard to hold up. It was like my shoulder wanted to give out. But when i went into my approach and into my backswing i didnt feel any pain at all. It all felt good. Even as I am at the bottom of my backswing it is fine but as I release the ball and go into my follow through theres this sharp, unbearable pain in my shoulder/neck region. Its a very sharp quick pain.

It doesnt make much sense to me because I can rotate my arm i can lift things, i can actually play Wii Bowling. I can do almost anything with no pain. But if i hold alot of weight away from my body with my right arm it feels like my arm is going to give out, and once i release the ball theres a very sharp pain at release. And I can feel pain if someone pushes down on my shoulder as well. The pain feels like it is coming from the front part of the shoulder and neck region like right in between there. I decided to stop bowling for a good month to see if it went away and I went back bowling and first ball it was exactly the same. Same amount of pain. Nothing changed. and its a type of pain i cant bowl through its a very acute pain. So its kind of scaring me because I really dont have the money right now to see a doctor i was just wondering if anyone had any knowledge on a injury such as this.

Anything will help. Just trying to see if anyone else has gone through the same thing and maybe I just need to lay off it for a while or maybe I do need to go to see a doctor. ::shrugs:: Anything will help.

icon, let me start by wishing you well. i have had 7 surgeries, 3 on non-bowling, 4 on bowling shoulder. it sounds like you might have a tear in your labrum tendon which is a tendon that goes from the front of shoulder to the shoulder itself, i had that on the left. if you hold your arm out straight and someone pushes down and you have no resistance and your arm collapses, that would be it, it should hurt on the top and the front. you can try rest depending on your job, but if it's a sharp pain, it sounds like a tear. i have been out of work for about 18 months with my 6 that i have had, but if things go right and you need surgery, they say 4-6 months. if you can get to a specialist, that would be my suggestion, i went to a ortho surgeon and am in the process of filing a suit against him, he left a screw that was supposed to be countersunk in the bone sticking out about 1/4". i wish i had better news, but that would be my guess, you really need a mri to see if it's a tear, good luck and let us know the news.
