Question for League Bowlers
« on: September 21, 2009, 04:27:05 AM »
Is there anything cool/unique that keeps you bowling the league you bowl?

e.g. brackets, high pots, league sponsorship, strike pots, etc

I bowl in a Senior league with a minimum age limit of 50.  It's a singles scratch league with a weekly shootout.  We have a dress code (league shirt and slacks) and the guys in the league are all class.  When someone leaves a solid 10 or 7 pin - theres no junmping up and down, swearing or crying!  When one wins or loses a match, they're always gracious in victory or defeat.
Don't get me wrong, it's very competitive, but still fun.  It's the guys I bowl with that keep me there.
Most leagues I've ever bowled in, it was the people in the league that made it what it was.

Can you go into more detail about the weekly shootout?

We have approx 60 bowlers in the league.  I say approx because we only have to commit to a block of 8 weeks. We bowl four 8 week sessions and some, like myself bowl in all four while some pick which session or sessions they want to bowl in.
Each week we have a 3 game qualifier and the top 16 make the cut and bowl match play. We bowl 4 on a pair so it doesn't take long for the qualifier. The round of 16 is four on a pair. After that it's just two on a pair.  It doesn't take long to get to the championship match.
We also have all the guys separated into 8 man divisions. During the qualifying, we also bowl for points, so we have separate division races.
After the first two sessions, and after the fourth session we have a playoff week.  You qualify for the playoffs in several ways.  Win your division during a session, win a weekly championship, be a weekly high qualifier, shoot 750 or over, shoot 280 or over.
We also have jackpots and an eliminator built into the qualifying round.
We have weekly payouts and a year-end payout based on the total points you win during the year.
So all in all it's a very well run league.

The league is in a small house, and everyone in the league are fun to talk to.

28 point system is great. If you bowl bad, the team can still get points

Yeah, we have doubles jackpots every night.  Each person can go doubles with anyone else in the league or just team only at a dollar a piece. Depending on the size of the league, it can get up to $1000 a game.  We also have a progressive doubles pot and strike bank for the 3rd game only.  I think it's a great way to keep bowling going is to incorporate more money into it.  It's also why I think I won't leave Hawaii for a while, cause I don't see it anywhere else as it is out here.

Can you describe in detail how your doubles jackpot works along with the progressive pot and the strike bank for the 3rd game?  They sound like fun.
