How do you play drier lanes?
« on: May 25, 2005, 01:16:09 PM »
For those of you who's comfort zone on a fresh shot is outside of like 12-13 board (for example - 12 out to 7, or like up the 9-10 baord)... what do you do when the lanes get drier and the backends start screaming... do you prefer to get deeper with a stronger ball and play a swing, or do you prefer to just drop down to a weaker ball and stay in your comfort zone of going down the boards?

Which do you prefer and why? And which do you think has better CARRY on stronger lanes... a swing shot, or down and in?

I once heard the phrase, "On drier lanes, straighter is greater."

No matter what, you should always use a weaker ball, since it will save energy longer.  using a strong ball would ONLY work if you were a low-rev player.  Tweeners/crankers would probably have trouble with the ball burning up or overhooking.  So, using a weak ball is best.  And as long as you have a ball that is saving energy for the pins, it doesn't really matter if you're swinging it or playing straight up, since that will depend on your style.  For example, a cranker could be swinging a power groove coast-to-coast, while a stroker plays a 15-10 line with the same ball, but as long as both deliveries allow the ball to save energy, they'll both work fine.  But, if it's really dry, it's ALWAYS better to use a weak release anyways.

Myself, I opt for the weaker ball, and adjust my line accordingly.

Before making any big moves when the pattern starts to burn up, I will usually tweak wrist positions and speed first. Next thing is the ball. In this case I would usually opt for a ball with less surface, which will likely have a weaker/higher rg drill.

Well, truthfully the only way I can stay semi-straighter is to throw plastic. Most of the time, I'm swinging my chrome yellow groove from 35-40 out to like 5 or 10, or trying to keep it in the oil longer and play more of a tight line. Either way I'm usually way deep. (and when I say playing that deep, I mean releasing the ball on that board, not standing on it) I need urethane!

it depends upon your definition of dry. i'll continually move left on the approach and the lane with my adjustments. i'll use more side roll than usual and avoid getting the ball too far to the right too early---this will either cause early hook or hook and quit. i'll change balls after the side roll, loft, speed change quits working.

Use a spare ball and continue to play my zone, or pick up a ball off the rack and throw it straight down the middle towards the headpin.

Great site is   www.lane1bowling.com

With my extreme skill...this has been my best hope

On edit: Really though, I always go to something weaker, I am always looking for control. I like it better when the lanes are NOT hooking. I don't move too far left when adjusting either because well...I flat out suck at it.

Drier lanes work fine for me. I can throw the ball hard like I want & as long as I come out of my ball the correct way, I will strike both on the right side and Brooklyn.

Sorry about the earlier reply. In drier lanes, I have to play the outside boards. I have to throw the ball wide & hard.

I first try moving (usually 5 -feet and 3 -target) to the left to see if I can play in some oil to get down the lane further.
The only reason I'll use a weaker ball is if my "standard" one is jumping too hard on the back end which often gives me a bit of over/under or wild leaves depending on how dry or messed up the backends are.
If these types of changes don't work I'll pull way inside and try to stay in the oil as long as possible.

You have to play the area that gives the most room for error. Generally that is chasing the oil line towards the center of the lane.

How far and how fast depends on dozens of factors.

Bob hit on what I ahve learned the hard way. with today equipment, a shorter pattern wall and flying backends some times a small move like 2-1 or even a 5-4 can start leaving pocket splits. I have found sometimes a more extreme more is neeed. but when I run out of adjustments and room on the lane I drop to a weaker ball. usually a lot weaker.

on certian lane conditions when I swinging my Absolute power over the 4th arrow out to the gutter I can drop back to a nice up the lane shot with the PG DRY/R.

once they get that dry that I run out of room again there is nothing but plastic to turn to.
