tracking over the thumb
« on: January 12, 2005, 03:30:22 PM »
Guys, does anyone have a straight answer on why people track over the thumb? I have seen this before with some of my balls, and to tell you the truth, really don't understand it too much. Everyone always says it should hit the middle finger if anything from flare, but it has never been that way with balls that I have thrown. Is there any real reason why you track over it, or is it just that you are throwing the ball different? I know i only track over it when i seem to throw the ball bad, not when i throw a good shot.

I track over my thumb when the ball just comes straight off my hand.  I try to keep my hand behind the ball until release, where I try to come around it a little.  If I don't make that move, usually when I'm throwing too hard, the ball just comes right off my hand and tracks over the left edge of the thumb.....

quote:
Hand at release turns slightly clockwise for full roller, ball will track on or close to inside of thumb. Thumb out and rolling off fingers with amount of counterclockwise turn will determine axis tilt or where track rolls left of thumb. Staying behind ball with very little turn can also hit thumb which would be higher than a 90 degree axis tilt. Just the opposite for lefties of course.

I still after many years of developing semi roller track release will sometimes straighten the ball out for certain conditions and end up over thumb, especially on straighter spare shooting.

See the thing is though, I usually throw the ball with a lot of axis rotation. I rarely come up the back of the ball, as it usually checks up too early with my style, speed, and tilt. Any other thoughts on why i track over the thumbhole on certain balls? Usually it is on balls with the pin under and low flare, I can put the pin under with high flare equipment and I rarely track over the thumb. Still not too clear on what causes this, i know it has a lot to do with release, but i don't know how. I don't turn the ball clockwise at release either.

I started a topic about this about a week ago, read through it. Good info.
