Polishing, what is the deal?!?!
« on: January 09, 2004, 03:00:51 AM »
Ok, there are a couple guys I know that are obsessed with the lustre king machine.  Every single week they put every single ball they have in there for at least a minute apiece.  It's all I can do to get them to actually throw it after I drill it before it goes off to be kill-I mean, polished.  It wouldn't be so bad, but they don't freshen up the surface before the next polishing.  We bowl on a short pattern, so length is a needed attribute out of a ball, but drilling low rg, fairly aggressive stuff strong and then polishing them to death makes me cringe.  Then they start doing this hook/fade really over/under stuff.  One of the guys has a skid/hard arc style, so the ball never really starts revving that early, but the other has a pretty early rolling style.  Leaves flat 10's and 7-10's a lot.  Finally drilled a couple balls that weren't drilled to roll early (his fave layout is ring finger above the pin, cg out about 3 inches), a Hyde (pin over bridge, cg out about an inch and a half) and a Throttle/R (pin over ring finger, cg negative about two inches).  The Hyde is too aggressive, or in other words, it doesn't give him much room to miss left.  The Throttle/R was perfect to begin with, but it's already been polished a couple times, so after less than 40 games, it's already doing the hook/fade thing.

Suggestions?  It's impossible to get length out of a low rg ball with a strong drilling, all you can do is turn it into an expensive urethane ball by polishing it to death.  I don't know what to tell him any more.  He's also having trouble adjusting to the newer urethane slugs, they're slicker than the slugs we used to use.  He's a gripper, and he has 7/16ths reverse and 1/16th right with only a 4 5/8ths by 4 3/4ths span.  I WANT to cut his reverse pitch at least an eighth, get him to let me drill stuff weaker, and get him to scotch brite stuff before polishing it, but I don't think anything short of giving him a ball or two and an unlimited supply of slugs is going to work.  It absolutely makes me CRAZY when I can't figure something out, or when somebody won't let me fix something, lol.  I think I'm gonna just cut back on the reverse the next ball I drill without telling him, lmao.

Well hamster i have an idea about the slugs..Since he has a hard time adjusting to the slickness why not get him a bigger thumbhole and put tape in it? Thats what i have gone too because my hand sweats bad sometimes and it slips so i just make it bigger and put tape in there..Would that work?

Yeah, he doesn't like using tape though.  Thanks anyway, lol.

Lol, won't do that either.  He likes to work the thumbhole out by wetsanding it, likes it smooth.

Lol, I knew it wouldn't take you long to respond, Kristi!  You know me, it drives me crazy when I can't figure something out.  And once again I managed to sound like a moron and hardly get across what I wanted to.  I know he doesn't blame me, I just want to FIGURE IT OUT!!!  There's a ball or two in the back I can use for "practicing" or in other words, I can drill a half million layouts with different span lengths and pitches, maybe that would work?

For those of you that might have gotten the impression, the guy's not dumb in the least.  Thanks anyway, king, but he doesn't suck, he doesn't care if he can't swing the ball gutter to gutter, and he doesn't need to.  He's better than nearly all of the guys in town, and that's saying something.  You don't just win ABC Nats (shooting back to back 3's along the way) if you're some ignorant house hack.  It's just that a ring over pin cg out drilling doesn't do the same on today's equipment as it did 8 or 9 years ago.  I just wish like hell I could find something that works for him.  I subscribe to the "customer is always right" motto, but I've got a pretty good eye for drilling, and whether or not it's something to take pride in, there's nothing more satisfying than having a ball fit well and do as close as possible to what the customer wants.

As far as knowing more than he does, I doubt it.  A lot of my knowledge is just book learning, I have nowhere near the amount of personal experience that he has.  You give this guy the right ball for any pattern, and he'll hit the pocket all day.  Plus, that big eagle sitting at his house kinda screams, "Who is daddy?"

Maybe this is why they doesn't want you doing any cover prep to their equipment?

You basically answered your own questions. Since he is a very good customer, and sends new business as well, it benefits you and the shop to assist.
Find a ball that you can use to experiment with, have him try it for awhile during practice, not just 2 or 3 frames. (this is for the change of span/pitches).
Order some slugs that will work for him. Try to find the ones you used to use, or something comparable....if he is worth the effort, and it sounds like he is, then work with him. But one thing at a time might be best.
JMHO.....

We used to make our own slugs, but I don't think the boss will get anymore quick plug to make them with, it's kinda expensive, not to mention we need a new mold.  Strider, honestly, I know what I'm doing, but we bowl on pretty over/under conditions.  Short pattern with soft backends, length and recovery is really hard to get sometimes, and then when the oil starts carrying down, polished stuff will drive you CRAZY.  Polished equipment has its place, and all but one of my balls are polished, but for the most part, they do NOT work well at this house at all.  I think the most important thing at this house is anything that's smooth and predictable, no matter what the surface.  I have a polished Detonator, doesn't hook much at all anymore, works incredibly down and in.  I have a Super Charge at about 800 grit, works great too.  Anything else is too jumpy, it'll either hook or it won't hook, there's not much in between.
