Suggestions For A Light Oil Ball
« on: July 14, 2009, 06:31:40 AM »
I need some help in picking a light oil ball and what drilling to put on it.  The last 2 weeks in league I have struggled because of not having one, due to the oil being much lighter than I'm used to, and the 3 balls I typically use are now too strong and hook way too early on light oil, forcing me further left than I'm comfortable with.  I have a Mean Machine, Diesel Particle, and a Mutant, all drilled pin down at about 3 3/8 to 4" from my PAP (4 1/2 over and 1/4 up), all at 600-1000 grit sheen, and I throw about 14mph (at the pin deck) on synthetic lanes.

What would be a good ball choice and what kind of layout might be best for me?

Look into a Power Groove.
PK 17 with a pancake and flip blocks core.
Very controllable ball with a solid hit.
Wouldn't be without one in the bag.
I also double mine as a spare ball on all conditions.

Columbia Loud Noize or Roto-Grip Neptune.

I'd drill 'em pin up, stacked, pin to pap about 5 inches.

i have an avalanche slide and a power groove dry-r that a friend just gave me and they are pretty great on dry. i prefer a little stronger drilling on a dry ball so its not violent on the backend. but if you can find one the weakest ball ive ever thrown in the b/g centaur from visionary.

One of the new urethanes would be good.  Maybe the new Hammer Vibe.    It's kinda strong though.

My Cherry Vibe snaps very hard on the dry.  I need to play an inside line to use it on light oil, but when they are really toast forget it.

Appreciate all of the input.  The Neptune is a good looking ball that has had some good things said about it in the Roto forum.  If I went with a pin up layout, could I get away with a 4 - 4 1/2 pin to pap position, or do I need to go longer than that?  I definitely want it to have good backend and clean through the front, and handle light to light-medium.  How much pin buffer would do the job?

Avalanche pearl is a good one.

I would take the Mean Machine which is listed as a reactive pearl and sand it with some 1500 then polish it. It would be an instant fix that wouldn't cost much.

Just use a good polish to get it very shinny and your ready to go. Trust me you can always add more polish and make any ball go dead straight. Or just add a little at a time for your desired reaction.

I will second the Avalanche Pearl.  Even on the dry, it clears the heads with ease, and doesn't provide a strong mid lane read.  With that said, it's not going to fly left(or right) in the back of the lane either.

I forgot to mention mine is drilled leverage and it doesn't over react on the drier lanes. It also clears the heads really well. It doesn't differ much from power grooves that I have had in years past. Which also work well.
