Local association house team challenge
« on: August 09, 2005, 01:39:08 AM »
Last Saturday our Local association held a house team challenge tournament. Each house selected their team by high average in that house.

Since there are 8 houses in the association they setup an 8 team bracket and made the tournament double elimination so there was also a loser’s bracket. The bracket was seeded by the teams drawing for a lane assignment.

Each match consisted of best 2 of 3 baker games. Prizes were $1000 for first and $500 for second. The houses and the association covered the cost so there was no entry fee.

The results were interesting in that the teams that ended up first and second would have appeared to be among the weakest 3 teams.

The baker game format was different than most had bowled and puts a different type of pressure on the bowlers as they only get 2 shots a game. There is no chance to make up for an errant shot and you let 4 other bowlers down.

I had a good time and hope they continue to do it in the future.

I'm sure you had a great time seeing how your team won the free $1,000.  Congratulations, you flat out-bowled many other anchor guys especially in the 10th frames.  On paper, the obvious best team only won one match.  Maybe next year, your team can get some shirts.

My suggestions were to invite as many youth bowlers to peak their interest in competitive bowling.  Also keep building this up so they don't have so many no-shows.  It should be an honor not taken lightly and hopefully everyone wants to participate.

I was upset with all the complaints I kept hearing though.  What's in it for me?  Everybody seemed to want money for nothing here.  Nobody participants paid any entry fee, there was a prize fund for the top 2 teams, most teams got a free shirt, pizza was provided...oh, did I mention there was no cost to the bowlers?  Free bowling, pizza, chance for money.....great deal to me.

Unfortunately I bowled for the easiest house in town and we had several of the better bowlers not show.  One of my teammates is a no-thumb bowler who didn't have a clue as to how to play the lanes.  I asked him if he thought the left lane was hooking more and he just looked at me funny.  I then asked about other adjustments just trying to get a feel from my "teammates" and he told me he just threw it harder.  This guy averaged a over 225 and fit every definition of a "flinger".  Ahhhh that was fun betting whether he left us a split or strike.

Congrats to Pinbuster's team.  While they were not the most talented individually, they came together as a team to win.  Team bowling is the best.

The amazing thing to me was that the association would reimburse the house for most of the cost of the shirts. But Brian screwed it up and didn’t get them done in time.

I told Cordell that the association should just buy all the shirts so that if anyone saw a bowler wearing them they would recognize them as being on the team tournament. I also suggested that they should promote this tournament as well as the all-star tournament during the entire season. Let people know how to qualify, current standings, when and where the tournaments will be held, etc.

I only knew 1 other bowler on my team. A couple of them had only one adjustment and that was to throw harder, one guy could get enough speed the other couldn’t. I was afraid the breakdown was going to get them, and it did, but fortunately it also got the other team eventually as well.

The only valid complaint I heard was that the early documents they sent us said it was going to start at 8:30 rather than Noon. Some of them were never contacted and showed up at 8:30 and had to come back.

Of course it was easier to have fun when you are winning. Like I said the Baker format was different and provided different pressures. I guess my normal team/doubles success helped there.
