Don't You Think That ..........
« on: January 21, 2009, 08:06:19 AM »
the good breaks and the bad breaks even out over a season?

Think of the times you felt that you threw a good shot only to leave a ten pin, or an eight pin or something else. You turn around and think, "Crap, that surely is a bad break!", especially if it costs you a point, or a game or a place in the standings.

However, remember those times when you threw it Brooklyn, and carry all ten, or the sweeper pin knocks down the one you left standing, or a lousy shot which hits on the nose manages to carry all ten. We certainly accept that strike, right?

Sometimes we even laugh about it, joking about the lousy hit with our team mates but we do not rush to change the score. We accept the strike gladly.

My guess is, without a scientific survey or knowledge to back me up, that the bad breaks and the good breaks mostly even out over a season.

Your thoughts?

I like to add to what dicnic mention in his post that other team get strikes on light hits or pick up a spare that you thought that they'll miss. But if we would do what they did it would be a split or a chopped spare. But I do agree that what comes around - goes around. We'll get our share of bad breaks as well as the good.
I hate ten pins but love the game of bowling with just the right ball to take them out.

They probably do even out.

The sad part is that most bowlers only remember the bad breaks, while refusing to recognize the good ones. I know guys who "cry and whine' when their opponent carries a lousy shot, as if they NEVER get the same "love".

Let me be the first in this thread to say that I AM LUCKY! I might be luckier than most because I carry everything some nights!  Then there are those other nights when the other guy gets his share (almost unbeknownst to him).

No. They don't even out.
Maybe over a pair they'll even out.
But my team is the one getting the bad breaks, their team is getting the good ones.

I always believed that for me the breaks went more my way than against me. I also believe that the style of roll you have or use on a specific condition plays alot into breaks.

Do they even out over the course of a season? Probably not.

Do they even out over an infinite period of time, absolutely.

I would say I get alot more good breaks than bad. As a matter of fact I have felt like I have been throwing the ball very badly for about the last year, however my ave. is up a couple pins.
It's just alot easier to forget the good breaks than the bad.

i think they even out over time, but not in a quantitative sense.

it evens out for me when you get strikes off non pocket hits, that's a bigger break because you aren't leaving a split.  a wrapped 7 pin will still be a spare at least.

if i narrow it down to pocket 7-10's as the bad break tho, i might get fewer bad breaks than good breaks.

There is no such thing as a good break or a bad break. You ALWAYS get what you deserve, like it or not. Good breaks are a way to describe something good that happened to you, bad breaks are the opposite. They only exist in our minds as reasons to succeed or fail.

There is ALWAYS an explanation for what happened, ie pin off spot, oil moved on lane, etc., but people will always blame LUCK or BREAKS because they refuse to look in the mirror to find any fault.

some days you're the dog, and some days you're the hydrant.

last night our team was the latter...

J_L_B,

Your post makes sense, and you are probably right, but since we don't always have the slo-motion replays available during league night we console each other by using the terms "good breaks or bad breaks."

I like to blame all my GOOD breaks on superior equipment, since I have zero bowling talent whatsoever... My BAD breaks are because I have zero bowling talent whatsoever, too.

You're getting WAY too technical.  Of course physics dictates stuff happens for a reason.  However, you aren't going to tell me that throwing a backdoor strike where you completely whiff the headpin isn't a good break?  The odds of you getting a strike without hitting the headpin are absolutely, positively horrible.  Yes, there's a legitimate reason according to physics that it struck, but 99.9% of the time if you miss the headpin you aren't going to strike.  Therefore, good break!

You would need to define “good breaks” or “bad breaks”.

If you define a good break as throwing a Brooklyn strike or tripping out a back door, the better bowler will get few of those compared to lower average bowlers simply because they don’t throw as many bad shots.

The percentage maybe the same for both but the number of occurrences is not.

With my definition of a “Good break” a better bowler comes out way ahead on the THS.

Every time you strike on a shot that was less than perfect it was a good break.

The lanes and balls allow for such a large margin of errors and every time you strike on one of those shots it is a good break.

Those more than make up for the bad breaks of bad carry on good shots. .
