Suggestions to get more Junior League Bowlers

Just wondering what everyone thinks will be necessary to get more kids bowling junior leagues again.

Miller: A lot o'' people don''t realize what''s really going on. They view life as a bunch o'' unconnected incidents ''n things. They don''t realize that there''s this, like, lattice o'' coincidence that lays on top o'' everything. Give you an example show you what I mean: suppose you''re thinkin'' about a plate o'' shrimp. Suddenly someone''ll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o'' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin'' for one, either. It''s all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

To increase bowling interest with our youth starts with the bowling alley management. They have to offer incentives. Here are a few...

1)Adult/child leagues with reduced lineage with free shoe rentals for all
2)Instructual clinic's at a reduced bowling rate on Saturday or Sunday mornings
3)If center demographic's are close, travel teams for all age groups
4)Our center offers kids one free game of bowling every day for the entire summer
5)For the teens our center offers bottomless bowling. $10 for 3 hours of bowling on slow league nights
6)Youth scholarship leagues

Here's a link to my center and all it offers for the kids. The center has to remember that todays youth are tomorrow's leagie bowlers.

I think a lot of the problem is that is clashes timewise with other popular sports.  So if you can find a time (each area will be different) where you have a window without some of those other popular sports running, then put in a youth league at that time.  Our center has youth leagues on Tues and Wed afternoon, Sat. morning and Jr/Adult on Mondays.  So 4 out of 7 days youth have league opportunities.

You have to be flexible too. Many kids are not in the same household each weekend.  So if they are able to prebowl (say two sets one Sat. so that the next Sat. they don't have to bowl) they can still participate in league.  Some kids cannot get to weekday afternoon bowling on time and have to pre bowl just one game each week.

Run shorter league seasons.  USBC has structured different youth memberships for leagues under 12 weeks in duration.

Put up flyers at local YMCAs and contact your local brother/sister programs.  Some youth homes are also looking for good cheap activities for their kids to participate in. We have another center in our assoc. that pays sactioning fees for such kids so they can bowl in USBC leagues and tournaments.

For many bowling parents, they are not aware that there are so many youth scholarship opportunities in bowling and at such young ages as USBC offers.  Bowling parents = bowling kids.  So go through your adult leagues pushing the scholarship program.
