Favorite drinks while bowling?
« on: August 22, 2013, 10:16:38 AM »
I was going to put this in the non-bowling related forum, but it applies to bowling I believe.  Lots of people drink to relax, calm nerves, slow the mental hamsters down, etc.  A lot of people drink different things while they're bowling than they do either beforehand or afterwards, and I was wanting some new ideas.  One of my favorites that the bowl doesn't offer anymore is called a Firecracker 500 (slightly modified).

1 shot Absolut 100
1 shot Bacardi 151
1 shot Wild Turkey
1 shot Southern Comfort
Spritz of Sprite/Sierra Mist
Bit of Grenadine
Bit of Hot Damn

Missing is the green Chartreuse, which they never had, and since the bowl doesn't carry Wild Turkey anymore, sadly I can't get it.  I had them add Hot Damn because it already tasted like cinnamon, and the HD put it over the top.  Had to be served in a tall draught mug, and just one of these got me feeling gooood.  I'm either thick blooded or have a real controlling brain because it takes a lot to get me a good buzz, so I'm looking for something strong so I don't have to drop 20 bucks for a buzz.  I don't like doing shots, comes on too stiff and quick, I like a drink.  And please no one say long island iced tea . .

Trying to win money in pots and points for my team, I don't cloud my mind, reflexes or my muscles with alcohol.  Makes no sense.  After bowling I'll have a beer with my team because when I'm trying to drive home, I feel the same way about clear mind, and reflexes.  I don't know of any sport, including bowling, that the effects of alcohol enhances your performance.

I'm with you.

So many here want bowling to be considered a sport but try to get snockered on the lanes.

I'll drink water or a soda.

Well again, to some it's an aid, to others, it's a hinderance.  All depends on personality.  Just because it doesn't work for you two doesn't mean it doesn't help others.  I've gotta have something to slow my brain down enough for my muscles to do what they're supposed to.  Now I don't completely fall apart if I don't have something to drink, but one or two helps.

Honestly, that's not the exact definition of an alcoholic, but it's leaning in that direction. Just something to think about.

So a beer or two twice a week is leaning in a certain direction?  I barely drink otherwise, and like I said, I can do just fine without it, it just helps.  Actually I didn't drink at all last year until the last month of the season, and I was fine.  Matter of fact it was to see whether it was in fact a crutch or not.  8 months of no drinking later, I determined it wasn't, so now I have a casual one or two.  It's just like my use of tape in the thumbhole, I use a single piece of white tape because I like the feel, not because I need it to patch a grip flaw.  I have a drink to take the edge off, just because it's relaxing, plus I just like to have something to drink while I bowl.  Sorry if I gave an impression otherwise, just having some fun here.

Gizmo, I understand completely what you're saying and I'm in the same boat.  I'm practically the same way.  I'll drink 2-3 beers or a couple captain and cokes for the entire night just to take the edge off.  I rarely ever drink much outside of bowling league.  It's nice to have a drink or two during the work week as well.  I just enjoy the drink and relax, it certainly doesn't diminish my performance.  When I put money in brackets / eliminators etc I wouldn't put myself at a disadvantage if it did affect my performance in a negative way.

My limit is 3 beers or 2 mixed drinks.  I think knowing ones limits here is key as well.....Water for the last 5 frames.

Lol dang, caught me.  That's what I used to do, yeah.  My max now is 2 mixed drinks, normally a single Wild Turkey and cola at the beginning of the night.  Like LGD said, you want to be completely sober driving home.  I don't want to be wobbling up on the approach either, I'm in 20 a night and 25 a night scratch leagues with brackets and side action, I need to be in full control of my faculties.  On the other hand though, it really takes a lot for me to even feel a buzz.  And when I say buzz, I don't mean a sit down and stare at a wall buzz, I'm talking like what you'd get from taking an aspirin or 2.  Like if you have a headache and you take them to remove the headache, not a different feeling like you're on morphine or something.  What I consider a buzz is just feeling relaxed, or like a more normal normal, you know?  I'm an anal perfectionist, so I'm constantly on edge or on point.  I just want to remove that edge and be calmer while I'm bowling, but I could put back a 6 pack of Bud Lights and not feel a thing.  Hope that clarifies it a little.  I do appreciate the concern and I can see what you're talking about LMAO.  That Firecracker would get most people flying or passed out somewhere.

A couple of beers once or twice a week??? LOL, ok.

And to add a bit, I was trying to speak everybody else's language in the OP.  A good buzz for me is feeling normal, not actually what everybody else would consider a buzz.  I don't like feeling different or like I'm losing any kind of control of myself.

A couple of beers once or twice a week??? LOL, ok.
