Superstitions
« on: May 05, 2003, 08:17:36 PM »
we all have them, STRANGE OR NOT what are yours ? Mine, if I'm bowling well is to walk the same path to the ball return around the tables and what ever side of the scoring table that I  started my string until it is broken. also if I have a big string going I'll just walk away from the table and walk around up and down the concourse area until it is my turn to bowl.

I try to sit down in the same seat after every shot.
I consider it part of my "post shot routine".

I also have a couple of shirts that I have worn when I happen to bowl well. I try to wear them. Of course, recently it hasn't helped.

And if I'm bowling league, I try to follow the same route to the lanes, and get the same parking place... Now - that one's just plain silly, but it makes me feel better.

I cant bowl with folding money in my pocket that is not in my wallet.  A couple of times I meant to buy something at the snack bar and it was too busy so I stuck the bills in my pocket and then forgot about it and bowled very low set.  After bowling I find the money in my pocket, so it's not like I was thinking about having the money in my pocket and that is why I bowled bad.

I guess I must be left out because I have no superstitions in bowling.  I have preferences, like I don't like to sit during 3-game sets as mentioned by someone else...I like to get to the lanes at least a half hour early to relax.  But if I don't then so be it.  Preferences, but no superstitions at all.

My bowling towel HAS to be folded into a square. when I switched from a logo beach style towel to a small micro-fiber towel I thought for sure it would mess me up. now it is the size of a small washcloth but (folded)
Cant use it till it's folded

I don't like bowling when a split is on the adjacent lane.

I always remove te watch and empty my pockets.

And if I get a big string going, I tell every stupid, lame, corny joke I can think of to lighten the tension.
Good luck & good bowling

I take everything out of my pockets, makes me feel lighter.
I always use the air blower on the hand I dont bowl with.
I always fix the back of my shirt right after I get on the approach and pick up my ball.
And I always "shake" my bowling hand out in front of me quickly before I put my fingers in the ball.

I always completely empty my pockets, including keys and change.  My towel is always folded the same way, with any logo on the inside of the folds and I pick up my ball with my left hand.

Ummmmm this is intresting.....
I'm surrently taking a myth class and the teacher has told us to find some weird superstitons in a sport or hobby that we do........
LOL

After I put on my bowling shoes, I walk around on the outside egdes of my feet. I picked up this habit from gymnastics and just walk around like that bowling.

I pick one song that I hate and get it stuck in my head. Usually repeat one line over and over and over again while on the approach. Keeps the lil voices out of my head.

After I throw a ball....gotta put my hand over the fan.....

Oh and I usually get punched or tackled by dizzle.....its a brother/sister thing (even tho we rn't related......)

Like others have said I'll empty all my pockets before
stepping on the approach.I'll wear the same shirt and
pants every week, and I'll try and park in the same spot
every week as well.My car hasn't been stolen or broken
into yet so I'll always try and get that same spot.

So that's not really a bowling superstition.  That's just so you can keep your car intact.

Mine is that I cant eat while bowling or even two hours before.  I really used to suffer during some tournaments that took most of the day.

So how much of what we do before/during bowling is habit and how much is superstition?  I think it is superstition if you think that bad luck will befall you if you stop doing it.  Otherwise, it is a habit, like a pre-shot routine, which is to get your subconscience going.

"The Rule Of Threes"!!!  This rule is as serious as 3 leafed plants such as poison ivy and poison oak.  "The Rule Of Threes" is that if there is a split on the adjacent lanes on both sides of your lane, or if there are splits on two lanes on one side of you, DO NOT ROLL THE BALL!  If you roll the ball with a split on both sides of you, or if there are two splits on one side, it is GUARANTEED that you will roll a split, making it 3 consecutive lanes with splits showing.  You must wait until at least one of the two splits showing are cleaned off from view, or you will pay the price of a split for your impatience.  I have seen this rule play out so many times that it is incredible.  You are safe to roll once one of the two splits disappears from sight.  I still recall one night about 2 years ago where one of my teammates was up on lane 21....there was a split showing on lane 20, and another split showing on lane 22....I told my teammate to hold up a minute, but he commented that he didn't believe in such hogwash....well, he rolled the ball on lane 21, and left a pocket 7-10 split, making 3 splits showing on lanes 20, 21, and 22!  When my teammate walked back off the approach, he was just shaking his head while I was saying "I told you so!".

A bowling good luck charm is to find a coin laying on the ground somewhere....put it in the watch pocket on your jeans.  If you find a coin in the bowling center parking lot, that's a really good find.
