Title: superstitious?
Post by: xrayjay on March 20, 2014, 10:28:22 PM
I was never superstitious until I bowled with a guy 8 yrs. ago who was. His thing was his ball. If the other team touched his ball, he would wipe the spot where the hand made first contact.

For me, if I drop my towel or find on the floor, I would dust it off and fold it over. And, if I'm bowling really bad, I would switch towels.

These towels are no longer in the bag, left behind in several houses in and outside of town. (One at the stadium) my favorite towel was from bowlers paradise - thanks Mike ;)

I'm pretty sure I'll get another pair of micro fibers at Walmart before fall league starts.

For me, it is not superstition, but something more like ocd. My towel has to be folded a certain way, and the fold lines prove it. I hate whenever somebody unfolds my towel. Also, if I notice anything even slightly irregular in my pattern of approach, it bugs me so much that I have no chance of making a halfway decent shot. There are times where I have to go back to my seat, sit down, and walk back up to the approach just to feel normal again.

I'm not superstitious whatsoever.  For example, when everyone seems to be afraid to bowl next to a split, I love doing it.  I figure there is nothing on the neighboring lane that can affect my ball at all.  I will likely get what I deserve depending on whether or not I rolled a good shot.  People who worry about the split next to them are already defeated mentally, and it takes very little to "push them over the edge".

I must confess to being a little O.C.D. when it comes to my towel, too.  It has to be folded.  I'm kind of a neat freak in many ways...  It is interesting to listen to other people's superstitions and why...

I liken a superstitious bowler to a fish in poker.

Haha yeah my towel has to be folded perfectly . . I always wipe/tap my slide shoe before I line up to make sure my shoe cover is off whether I know it is or not, I always eyeball the pins to make sure I don't have a bad rack, and I always look at the approach to see if there's any fuzz or debris.

I always slide on the approach as I grab my ball to make sure my shoe cover is off, and again slide my foot on the approach as I line my foot up to make sure my shoe slides correctly.

Is making sure your shoe cover is off so you don't plant your grill into the lane a good habit or a superstition?

I am pretty sure this became a habit thread :P

There's was a good older gent (rip) who used a Gadget type brace and who was set in his ways.  when he's bowling well, his left fingers didn't touch anything. When he threw a bad shot, he'd redo his straps. He missed a spare, he removed his wrist brace until his next frame is up.

Nobody even noticed it after all those years until his son mentioned it.

I'm not superstitious, but if I bowl good one night why would I want to wear a different shirt the next night?  Just call me careful.  --  JohnP

If your gonna wash it you might as well wear a different shirt.  You'll wash the good right out of it.

Just like every once in a while you take a ball off the press, put your hand in it and it just feels REALLY good.  You go out and throw it and it does everything right in all the right places.  When you get one of these don't ever clean it or change the surface.  Use it til it dies.  Then hope it doesn't take a year to find it's replacement.

I'm not too superstitious...however I like to hear "Good luck and good bowling." I used to work in a family practice clinic and one of our docs would always start the day by drawing a cross in the air with her hand and saying "Go forth and do good patient care." So it's along those lines. I don't believe it would be detrimental if I didn't hear it but, it's just one of those things I like to hear.
