SURVEY! Hooking the ball at Spares or Hard & Straight?
« on: December 29, 2004, 04:57:25 AM »
Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to take a survey on how everyone picks up their corner pin spares. Most importantly the 4 & 7 pin for Right handers or 6 & 10 pin for Lefty's. I like to Rev the ball a bunch and I've been working on Throwing straight at most spares.

3 years ago I entered a tournament in which the lanes were heavily oiled. I didn't have the luxury of hooking the ball at the 4 & 7 pins like I did at home. This opened my eyes and was a "Reality Check." At home, there is enough back end for the ball to recover and "hook" at the corner pins. I no longer had that luxury at tournaments (Tons of room for error)

However, as I start to bowl more tournaments, I am noticing more oil. To combat this, I'm learning to throw it straight cross alley or more direct at the pins. I'm still inconsistent, but I'm working on it.

Have you guys had the same problem? Do you throw hard and straight at corner pins or do you still hook the ball at it? (Depending on conditions). I'm interested to know about changing balls, changing hand release, speed.

Thanks!

I throw straight at literally ALL my spares, except for a full rack. Everything else though is fair game for my plastic ball.

Straight with a spare ball for about 95% of my spares.  The only ones I hook that ball at are the 5, 1-2, 1-2-8

I use a spare ball at everything. Straight at everything. Takes the lane conditions out of play, and makes the game a lot easier.

Also saves a ton of wear and tear on the high end stuff.

Straight at everything on the right side (righty) and hook at everything on the left side on oil. On dry hook it at everything except 6,9,10.

Hard and fast with plastic at the right side, 6, 9, or 10. All others use my strike ball and let the ball do what it might. Will play shots a little harder and faster to take the lane out of it somewhat. Do not miss many spares, so it works well for me.

I bowl bunches of tournaments...taking the guess work out of spare shooting is the name of the game. Straight is straight everywhere. Sure there are times when you need to use your strike ball, double woods especially, and some splits, and the bucket. I tried changing my release at spares to make the plastic ball go straight,...duh, then my pro shop guys says why not use your regular release with a ball that will not hook. We took a plastic ball and drilled it with negative side weight,...then glossed it with his best polish.
I also have the finger lifts TWO SIZES too big,...now single pin spares, and spares that I use this ball at, are a lot more simple,..and I don't have to throw any harder than normal...

Straight with a polished urethane or plastic ball at everything except the 2-8, 3-9, or any spare where I could use a hook shot to better read the lane.

quote:
I've seen a dramatic improvement in my single pin spare conversion since I started throwing straight at them.  This is especially true of the right side ones.  If I'm in my normal house I still sometimes hook the 7 pin because its in my comfort zone but I think its cheating myself long term so I'm  trying to stop doing it.

Also, while I would prefer to use plastic I currently can't afford another ball and I flat wore out my one plastic ball (leaving me with a one ball "arsenal" ) so I am breaking my wrist to kill the hook on my Blazing Inferno.  If its done right you really can make it go straight.

Regards,

Bill

You could try and resurface the plastic, sometimes the track does get really worn on spare balls.

Up unitl this year went straight at all spares with my Track Sensor. For some reason this year have started to hook at a lot of spares. Lanes are allowing me to do it and get by with it. Am looking at getting a better spare ball to be able to go back to hard and straight.

Straight ball at all corner spares, hard and fast with plastic. The only time I may use my strike ball and a minor hook at the spare would be something like a 2-4-7-8 where I need to carry the double wood.

i hook the ball at everything but 6-9-10 but even then if im throwing the hot rod pro stock pearl or the super charge; i flatten the ball out at them. for the heavy oil i use my triple extreme but in practice i see if i can slow it down over second arrow(righty) to see if i get the 4-7 but if i dont i throw straight down the center of the lane the same way and that usually works for me. other than heavy oil i just slow my ball down and put it over second arrow with a lot of revs. just what i personally do.
