SURVEY! Hooking the ball at Spares or Hard & Straight?
« on: December 29, 2004, 04:57:25 AM »
Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to take a survey on how everyone picks up their corner pin spares. Most importantly the 4 & 7 pin for Right handers or 6 & 10 pin for Lefty's. I like to Rev the ball a bunch and I've been working on Throwing straight at most spares.

3 years ago I entered a tournament in which the lanes were heavily oiled. I didn't have the luxury of hooking the ball at the 4 & 7 pins like I did at home. This opened my eyes and was a "Reality Check." At home, there is enough back end for the ball to recover and "hook" at the corner pins. I no longer had that luxury at tournaments (Tons of room for error)

However, as I start to bowl more tournaments, I am noticing more oil. To combat this, I'm learning to throw it straight cross alley or more direct at the pins. I'm still inconsistent, but I'm working on it.

Have you guys had the same problem? Do you throw hard and straight at corner pins or do you still hook the ball at it? (Depending on conditions). I'm interested to know about changing balls, changing hand release, speed.

Thanks!

I go hard and straight with plastic at most spares on both sides of the lane, including washouts.  Exceptions:  Double wood, bucket, 3-6-9-10, any headpin leave, other than a washout (when I miss the building ), and the 5 (or 5-9, when I miss the building the other way ).

On edit:  OK, given two options - hook the ball at spares or go hard and straight, I chose hard and straight.  However, I don't actually change my speed for my straight spare shot, but I do change my delivery to attempt to achieve zero tilt and zero rotation.

I must concur with the majority of responses here.  My Big Blue Spare gets called into for virtually all spares that don't require angle.  Double woods and combinations of double woods (i.e. bucket, 2-4-7-8, etc.) call for using my strike ball with some modification of feet and target.  I also use my strike ball for 5 pins, not that I leave a whole bunch of those.

Everything else gets attacked by Big Blue Spare.

I use a plastic ball on all spares except double wood.  As you bowl on more difficult conditions, you will appreciate using plastic more and more.

I use a strike ball and hook it 3 or 4 boards at all spares. Throw normal speed.

You guys that are throwing HARD at spares make sure you are as accurate throwing hard as you are normal speed. Some people are not as accurate and find that they really don't have to throw any harder than normal using plastic.

Bowl great!

I agree with ron here. A lot of people think you have to throw it 20 mph to make it go straight. I throw my normal speed at spare with plastic and it still goes straight. The ball does go faster then my strike ball though, since it doesnt lose a lot of speed hooking, and having as much friction. Its usually about 17-18 mph on quabica. (sp?)

I mix it up depending on what I see. I hook the ball at a lot of my spares and am very successful doing so, unless I see a flood...whereas I would then use my spare ball. Being a righty, I throw straight at the 6, 10, and 6-10.

I use plastic for the corners and the 4-7 and 6-10 combo's. I use my strike ball for the rest.

Single pin spares on the right side... i just throw a straight ball.  Not necessarly hard but straight, normal relase minimal hand put into the ball.

With any combination on the right side or a double wood, i hook at the spare so as to get the ball to carry through the pins to take out the back pin.

I have noticed that throwing a straight ball at spares makes me less prone to chopping spares like the 3,6,10... or the 6,10.

I rev plastic at my 6 and 10 pin.  Hook my normal balls at everything else.

Hard and straight at all single pins and side by sides (7/8,8/9, etc.).
Varying degree of hook for multi pin spares depending on what gives me the best chance to spare.

I use my strike ball for all spares, same speed, same wrist position. Never felt comfortable with a spare ball. Maybe didn't have right one? I'd say I'm probably 95% on single pin spares, mostly 10's. Don't think going straight with spare ball would get that number much higher. Still see guys in league miss with plastic, even the better bowlers. Whatever you're comfortable with I suppose.

Learn how to throw a plastic ball straight....not even have to be hard.  Why let the lane condition determine where the ball goes?

My spare % went way up when I went straight.

normal speed and straight (why would you speed up and change your form for a routine spare?)

curious how many throw corner straight across the lanes or straight down, throwing across I still miss some with plastic, don't always align myself and arm properly.

In my home lanes I normally throw cross-lane at both corners.  However, once in a while I'll throw cross lane at 10 pins (righty) and down around 5th arrow at 7 pins.  I do this to keep used to the feeling of doing it, since when I'm in a strange center I always shoot up the left side for left side spares (see Bob Hanson's discussion earlier in this thread in re the 4-7 being a tricky spare since you don't know the lane characteristics or oil pattern on that side.)

Hi,

I am right-handed and use my normal strike ball for anything, first or second shot, except for the 6 and 10 pin and occasional spilts, where I switch to polyester ball.

For normal spares I simply make feet adjustments, sometimes release changes (especially on the 3 pin and right-side pin combos). Maybe this works fine for me because I am a stroker with good control, medium ball speed (15 mph) and rather low revs (225 RPM).

I also experimented with polyester on 7 or 4 leaves, but this didn't provide as much control and accuracy as the reactive or perticle balls I use in the 1st shot of a frame.
