if you take 5 steps, put your heel on the foul line and walk 5.5 normal steps. This is a good determining factor of a typical starting position. However, in your approach the first couple steps should be smaller, building in length the slide being the longest...but still taking up the same distance as in the above. With this said, timing is based on the amount of time your approach takes and the amount of time your armswing takes. A significantly shorter approach will require a slower than normal cadence or a reduction in armswing time to make up for the faster completed approach. The problem here is that when bowling well, it wont make a difference much. However, you will be susceptible you having troubles getting into time and maintaining good consistant timing. Remember the closer you can bowl to your natural abilities (ie. like walking) the easier things come and the easier things are repeatable.
Consequently if you are tall with long legs, the more approach you will naturally take. The shorter the less. The cadance should be as natural as walking. Focus on this and you will find you natural starting position the approach.
