SURVEY: Influence of BallReviews on your Game/Equipment?
« on: March 09, 2005, 06:19:28 AM »
Hi everyone,

I just wanted to ask you guys a question about the influence of this site and your bowling.

The reason I ask this is, When I joined BallREviews in 2001, I was looking for a site in which I can read reviews on equipment. I got more than that. I was able to ask questions by checking out the forums and latest posts.

In the past 3 years, I have learned more about bowling, layouts, weights, strategy, lane management, etc...than I have in the last 15 years.

Up until 4 years ago, I didn't know anything about layouts, PAP, MB, rev rate, etc. From the minds of various bowlers, I was able to intake loads of information at the click of a mouse.

I would like to thank everyone on this site that has helped me or anyone out with their game and/or equipment. I find that the information, advice, and friendships are priceless. Thanks to Scott Scriver and everyone here on BallReviews.

With that in mind...have you gained anything since joining Ballreviews?

While I’ve picked up a few tidbits of information on bowling the most important thing I’ve gotten from this site is a feeling of friendship with several of the posters.

I've learned literally everything I know about bowling from here. Learned how to throw the ball (some what more) correctly then I was before. And as for equipment, well lets put it this way: If I had never come here I would probably have maybe 2-3 balls, as opposed to the 12 or so I have, plus all the ones I've gotten rid of.

I got the basis of all my bowling knowledge from here.  Then again, I've only been bowling a year, but still.  I did originally come for the reviews, but I almost never read them anymore.

Wow, keep em' coming guys. I also feel that this site is also a curse and a blessing. I am not a member of the "Ball a month Club," but I do at times feel that I need a new ball, "Just, because it looks nice or someone else with a similiar game had a nice look with it."

I also spend most of my time in the forums "Learning" more about the game...

ive been on this site for like 3 months or so. Really, to be honest, i havent learned much about bowling from this site. This is because i work at a pro shop and thats where i learn all the wonderful (and useless) information that i know. I do enjoy this site though. It lets me spread what i know about the game, and in some cases learn more about a certain topic. I love reading the reviews, even though i wont be purchasing any of the products because i have everything i need for now. Also because i get lots of free balls , in one year, i got a x-factor, throttle up, saw blade, blade pearl, and i also have a sharp blade and big blue spare which i did purchase. Anyway, back to this post, the main reason that i like this site is the forums. I love to answer questions and argu with people about a certain thing. Anyway, i have to go do some homework now because i got like 4 tests tomorrow, so thats it for now.

I had been bowling in one league or another for nearly 18 years before I became a member of this site.  During this time I knew nothing about the technical side of the balls or drilling.  Before this site I would go into my proshop and basically say this is what I'm looking for and I would rely on my driller to drill a ball based on that.  Even though I may not post a lot I have taken in a ton of knowledge and can go into the proshop and fine tune what I'm looking for and actually know what my driller is talking about.  This site and it's knowledgeable members has benefited my game in so many ways.  One of the best posts I have found has been the Unofficial Ballreviews F.A.Q. which I'm about to bump to the top ( http://www.ballreviews.com/Forum/Replies.asp?TopicID=74110&ForumID=16&CategoryID=5 ).  Many thanks to those out there who have helped boost my knowledge in one way or another.

I would also like to add that this site has been a great place to buy, sell and trade equipment so that I could try out a ball or company that I wouldn't normally have had drilled before I became a member (some of which aren't even carried by my proshop).

Hmm, I just noticed something.  You mention "I want to thank Scott Scriver" or something like that.  I didn't really know Scott, but I do imagine we have to give him good credit.  This place would not exist if he wasn't around, and it was like it is now, but when it first started out.  So, I don't know you Scott, but thanks anyways for making this place good enough that it can effectively work as a total Forum Anarchy.

This site has saved me a bunch of money.  If you're considering the purchase of a new piece of equipment for a specific purpose, you can usually find a couple of people here who have thrown the ball considering and at least one ball you already own.  A quick comparison offers a world of knowledge you simply can't find anywhere else.  Equipment seems to rarely do what the manufacturer says it will do.

I've also been turned on to some great equipment, such as the Dyno-Thane Barrage, that I never would have tried without suggestions offered by other BR members.

There are countless little tips and tricks you pick up off the boards.  There are just too many to even attempt listing.

Finally, though we have some great people here who may offer better advice than others, almost everyone is trying to help each other get better or enjoy the game more.  It is also nice to be able to share my knowledge with others who appreciate it (and even those who don't!)

My knowledge about ball layouts, coverstock preparation, laying the groundwork for a proper ball arsenal to have in leagues/tournaments, as well as ways of tackling lane conditions from multiple perspectives has increased 1000 fold since finding out about ballreviews in November of 2003. I think as a result I'm able to walk into a center that I've never bowled in, assess the conditions quickly and pull out the right equipment to at least have a decent look on the lanes. At the time I was first finding out about ballreviews was when my family life was settling in and I was looking to dive more deeply into bowling again, and it's been a wonderful year and a half since discovering the site. I've made many good friends, met some of the posters on the board, and will continue to read the threads and try to post when I can any insights/experiences I may have about the game.

Although I work part-time in a pro shop, which gives me the opportunity to learn a great deal (thanks, Brian and Bill!), I still am able to learn more from reading the forums on this site.  I haven't found a bowling website that is more informative.

I have also had the opportunity to meet some great people that post or have posted here in the past, and have learned a great deal from some of them.  I look forward to seeing them again, and meeting more in the years to come.

Very little.  Games are so diverse and opinions on conditons are varied as well.  One person may state oily on a shot that ball "A" excels on and to me that is medium at best.  To many reviews also state I like ball because I shot XXXXX score.   Score rarely affects my review of a ball.

I do read buddiesproshop's reviews and a few others.  Mostly I use BTM and my own experience.

It was a great help for me so far. The reviews archive is quite a good source when I considered buying used equipment, which ball to choose for which condition and which recation to expect. With all the infos from the GOOD reviews (not those "hits like a truck, great ball"...) I was able to build a very versatile and rather cheap ball arsenal which is complet now and covers anything from dry lanes to heavy oil.

Additionally, whenever I had questions about equipment or technique, I got a quick answer and advice from several points of view. I have not been disappointed so far!

Another great issue are discussions about the development of the bowling sport - regulations of the equipment, social vs. regular bowlers etc. This is a very importnat thing about this forum and the positive development of the sport.
