Ball Grips The Pros Use
« on: May 12, 2012, 12:30:47 PM »
I was bored today, so I started trying to find the different grip lay-outs the pros use such as span, pitches, etc. All I could find was Norm Duke.

Is there a site where a person can view their grip specs?

Some of the manufacturers have their staff's specs on their websites, not sure about Storm specifically. Other times I have seen individual players' sites with them.

Brunswick did at one time, but I couldn't find any info on their site today. Couldn't find anything on the Storm and Ebonite sites either. Maybe I don't know how to look????

Jim,

May I ask why you're interested in such?
I hope you don't intend to copy any of their drillings/layouts.
I hope they are just a curiosity, as there are far too many variables involved in these "equations" for theirs to be suitable for what you face.

Jeff,

For quite some time I have been wanting to try a couple of lateral finger pitch things and decided if I was going to do so, to do it this summer, so in my boredom for something to do the other day, I tried searching to see what others use. As for coping the pros, I have no intentions of copying anyone.

I did notice one thing and that is of the ones listed in the link, it seems over half of them drop the ring finger 1/16". Do you know what the reason may be for this?

Jim,

they drop the ring finger 1/16" from what??
Unless you know the physical construction of each person's hand, you can't make a generic statement that everyone's ring finger span will always be xxx longer/shorter than their middle finger span.
PLUS
they may change the difference between them for any number of reasons.
Myself, for instance, I dropped my ring finger span by 1/8" so that both spans are identical, because of tendonitis in my 2nd ring finger joint.

As opposed to the finger spans, I'd be more concerned with left/right and forward/reverse pitches of the finger holes. These can make a much bigger difference
and are still very specific to each person's hand, especially as we get older (more reverse to handle stiffening joints, as one option).
The left/right pitch of everyone's fingers is slightly different and the driller should pay special attention to that, as this was the basis for your initial search. This too can change over time.

Jeff,

When you dropped your ring finger, what effects did this "maybe" have on things such as your releasing the ball, leverage, coming around the ball as it comes off your hand, PAP, rotation, tilt, etc and such things?
