Swing path question

Hi guys

It's not a 'which ball hooks the most' question for a change, so here goes.

I bowled Lilac City over the weekend (did really well in the Western & Central Triples, but average in the other events).  One of the guys in our group had a digital camera and he took movies of the six of us bowling at different times during the course of the tournament.

I downloaded the video, and much to my horror, I've got a figure-8 type loop in my swing  I normally start the ball at shoulder height to generate some ball speed being petite, but I can't for the life of me figure out why the swing is loopy.  A friend of mine told me I should lock my elbow at the bottom of the swing, but that sounds to me like it would completely impede a free-type armswing.

Any suggestions before I see my coach this summer?  Thanks

Can you post your swing for viewing?  And describe your looping figure 8 armswing in more detail?

P.S. -- I ended the year at 181, which is lower than last year (193), but my spare shooting has been awful this whole year (especially left side spares, and I'm right handed).  I'm going to see my coach anyway because it's a) tradition and b) we can work on other things to get me ready for the fall season.  Thanks again

I would agree with Bones......if at release your'e always squared up to your target,...then don't worry about it.

Email pishtosh or leftside, they can post the video for you....

Where do you start your ball ....middle of your chest, outside your body, etc??

without more information and or seeing the swing, no one should endorse a loop. While many good bowlers have them, and many good bowlers even intentionally want them (as in the pro-grove), withour seeing you just cant tell if your loop is benifical or hindering your improvement. Perhaps Bones and others have read something that makes them certian, but I have not. Please send me your video and I will look and post for you.

I usually have the elbow just at my side, with no tuck.  Tuck is something I can try later tonight.  Thanks!

I would certainly bring it up to your coach and discuss how he/she sees it and whether it is necessary to make a change or it fits into your physical game.  I have worked hard for years on having a straight arm swing only to have my gold level coach and teammate recommend a new swing.  I now start with the ball closer to the center of my body about chest high, push the ball up and inthe direction of the toe of my right foot, swing back inside to outside to clear my hip, loop at the top, and swing forward under my shoulder and down the target line.  The explanation I got was that this type of swing helped to eliminate my tendency to muscle and control the swing.  The loop at the top made a smoother transition than straight back and forth.  It took a while to learn the feeling of allowing the ball to swing to the outside instead of trying to pull it behnd me.  The result was a free armswing, better leverage, and a cleaner release.

What works for one does always work for everyone.  It needs to fit in with the rest of your physical game and match up to your level of ability.  Hopefully, your coach will know best.

Bones,

   Not trying to be anal here (although I regularly am), we both know that an inside out swing and an outside in swing both can be at exactly at the same position at the bottom of the swing but send the ball in different directions despite having the same laydown position. I do agree that if it is repeatable all the better, but having an outside in loop trying to send it right wile cause the bowler to follow through right while the converse is also true. I would like to also point out, that there has never been a top professional with an outside in loop (at least that I can remember) and there have only been a couple with moderate inside out swings. With this said, lets be safe if at all possible and give the best advise we can.
