So I recently got a used ball on Ebay which was listed with a Switch Grip Thumb. I have them with molds installed on my current equipment, so I thought it would be easy enough to test out the layout. However, when I put my existing thumb into the "new" ball the inner sleeve sticks out by 3/8".

Is there any normal explanation as to why Switch Grip outers would be different lengths? I am ignorant to the finer details of drillings these, but is it common? Did the seller have custom work done that they didn't list (or know of), or does my driller not install them correctly?

I mean I can get a outer sleeve that fits easy enough, but that really seems to defeat the point of a universal system.

Are the thumb pitches the same on both outer sleeves? If they put pitches in the outer sleeve and not in the inner part it could cause that! I know with the Vise Grip IT, you install everything with zero pitch and you put the pitches in the slug. Just a thought!!!

Is it sticking up 3/8" all the way around or just on one side? They may have used a plug cutter and trimmed it down some for his thumb insert.

I had a similar problem when I first started with the SwitchGrip set up. The 1-1/2" bit comes pre-set to a given depth. What I found was that this left 3/4" of the slug and inner hanging out of the ball and my shortish thumb was bottoming out in the thumbhole. What was going to happen when I had someone wioth a longer thumb want the set up? So I decided to adjust the collar to set the outer deeper in the ball and that sounds like what your pro shop guy did.

Sounds like its what Doug said, or the driller pitched the outer due to a large amount of required pitch.
