Putting the thumb in first, why is it wrong?
« on: March 14, 2004, 11:28:59 AM »
Ok,  ive gotten into the habit of sinking my thumb in before my fingers,  my grip just feels better doing it that way.  Why are you supposed to put fingers in first and then sink the thumb.  My thumb tends to feel loose when i do that,  it just feels unnatural to me.  Ive had this habit ever since my first finger tip ball.  Ive had my span checked and had balls drilled by several different folks,  had the thumb hole adjusted, etc.  but nothing seems to make it feel right for me.

Can someone tell me whats the difference as far as doing it the way i do and sinking it in like everyone tells me i should, fingers first?

Conventional wisdom is that the thumb should go in last since it is the first that should leave its hole on release.

It's not wrong, just different. Personally, I find it difficult to put the thumb in first, especially with finger grips, but if the lanes are really toasted, putting the thumb in first gives me  a few boards less hook, which isn't a bad thing at all.

Tommy Jones also inserts his thumb first, then his fingers.

The great Dave Husted also is a fingers-in-last bowler.

Good to see im not alone.  Every time i get fitted for a ball and i do that the driller chastises me.  Like big baller says,  if i put it in fingers first the ball feels like its going to fall off,  and this is with every finger tip ball ive ever had drilled.  No adjustment has ever helped so ive just gotten used to it.  I just like the feeling of the thumb being snug, the ball feels much more secure.  Otherwise i tend to grip the ball and this throws my release off way too much.

if you look at the difference in both, when the thumb goes in first, the fingers dont go as far into the holes, that is, if you have semi-tight holes. It just gives you a different feeling grip is all, do whats comfortable, except 2 finger, DONT DO THAT!

I also get a better feel with my thumb in first.  however as bod pointed out, with the stretched finger tip span, it is better to go finger 1st.  I would still like to do the thumb in first, but am unable to find a driller to fit me properly.  So have to go with finger first, and sometimes I tend to lose the ball at the bottom of the swing.

quote:
For many years after the finger tip grip came into vogue, the trend was to really stetch a person span.  If you have a very stretched span it is easier to set the fingers to the right depth and pull back across the ball setting tension on the fingers as you set the thumb.  The trend in recent years is to go with a much more relaxed grip.  In that situation it probably makes little difference whether you set the thumb or fingers first.

You go Bob!  Exactly.

In my opinion, you should not, with a relaxed grip, put your fingers all the way in the holes first.  It will tend to cause you to stuff them in too far and restretch the grip -- something most bowlers don't need and that defeats the purpose of the relaxed grip.  (Which I believe more bowlers should use, and yes, you can get PLENTY of revs).  If you feel more comfortable put the fingers part way in, insert the thumb fully and then finish inserting your fingers.  If you can't do that, your span is too long.

I feel very comfortable with my fingers in first. I only put my finger tips in up to the first crease on my finger the extend to put my thumb in.  MY thumb hole is pinched nice so i don't have a problem with it being uncomfortable , an i don't have a problem with it coming on on my release. I just think for me if i put my tumb in first i wont get a better grip with my fingertips.  I like to put a good spin on the ball an i feel i can get that by having a better grip with my fingers .

But the old saying is what ever works works.
