switching ball weights?
« on: April 19, 2005, 11:46:53 PM »
Ive thrown a 15# ball ever since i was 14 years old.  Lately i have been wondering if i should switch to a 14# ball.  Sometimes my elbow hurts when i through my ball and i was thinking that maybe if i switched to a 14# it wouldnt be as bad.  I was just wanting some opinions and maybe some of you guys have done the same or similar switch

Also i was planning on trying this with a Morich S&A..what pin placement and top weight would you suggest.  i throw the ball about 18-19 mph with med-high revs

Thanks
Brandon

A couple years ago I had elbow problems so bad, I almost felt like my hand weighed 100 pounds. I changed drillers and come to find out after a new ball drilled to HIS measurements, my original ball was drilled wrong. I think as we age, our span changes a bit, this might be part of your problem. I used a forearm air pad ( bought it at Wal Mart) and during bowling it helped. After I took it off, I still felt the pain, that's why I went to a different driller. I'm not saying your ball is drilled wrong, just something to have checked.

Dropping weights, as I have seen, usually causes people the 'chunk' the ball more, loss of accuracy and then they find out it was something else after replacing everything they had.

Just something to think about.

I played baseball through-out hs and was a pitcher. Had an offer to play at a local college but would have had to have my elbow scoped.  It doesnt hurt when i bowl because its an underhanded motion and thats a more natural than overhanded.  But if i throw 6-8 games in a row it starts to get sore.  If i want to move any farther im going to have to get past that amount of games.  I wasnt going to buy a whole new line of 14# until i tried it out.  Was just wandering if what i was thinking was a good idea or not

Charge300,

I would first go to a good pro shop and bring the ball that is causing you to have pain in you elbow and describe the problem to the staff.  They may either do some adjustments to your spans, or suggest that you go to a lighter ball.  Also ask them if the Shock and Awe would fit your game.

I was thinking of the S&A bc a friend of mine who bowls on the south senior regional tour(guppy troup) gave me a wpn of mass bias.  I really like the ball but when he gave it to me it already had a lot of games on it and i now want to try another Morich ball.  I like angularity and the S&A i hear has a lot, thats another reason i wanted to try it out.

Charge, a friend of mine was having pain in his elbow when he bowled and he also threw 15#s. I had a forearm band in my bag  and the next bowling night he tried it out and didn't have any pain. Hes used it since nov. and has had no pain in his elbow since.
I'd try a forearm band first along with having your span checked like azguy mentioned. If the band helps the elbow it would be cheaper than buying a whole new arsenal of balls.

I'm going to disagree with everyone who posted so far. Don't be a macho dummy! See a doctor first to try to find out the medical cause of your pain. Believe, pain untreated now can wind up being anything from a minor to a truly major physical ailment 2 to 20 years down the line.

There are any number of solutions to the bowling end of this. The medical diagnosis will also lead you to the eventual PROPER bowling solution at the same time, whether it be a lower weight or a wrapping device of some sort on your elbow, forearm or wherever.

I had a similar problem, and moving to 14lb solved the problem.

Your problem may be different.  I agree with the others - have your equipment checked, and possibly have somebody look at your form.

I was more inclined to muscle my swing, and 15 was just too heavy (of course I've only been bowling for a year and my body wasn't used to the motions), but moving to 14 has eliminated my problem.

Maybe somebody here will know the exact rule, but I read somewhere about a test to see if the ball was the right weight.  Something about being able to hold the ball straight out in front of you for a length of time (maybe 30 seconds???)
